Everyone is invited to community music experience
January 7th 2010
Founder of the 10-year-old community drum circle and Fallbrook resident Thomas Rondeau sits with a satisfied grin as he lightly beats his conga drums while a friend performs a spiritual sage-smudging around the group of about 20 people as a way to ward off negative vibes and keep bad spirits from entering the area on the sunny afternoon of Dec. 19 at Village Square on Main Ave.
Valerie Lane Simonsen, a naturopathic doctor from Maui who has been in Fallbrook for several months writing books about women’s emotional health issues, was studying in the library across the street when she heard the drums call to her. The temporary area resident beats on a small shiny hand-held tin djembe drum while dancing barefoot and wearing a skirt that appears to be made out of a multi-colored woven floor mat. She says, “You can’t be shy. You just have to let go and feel the beat of the drums become in sync with your heart.”
Music educator Daniel Ide of Fallbrook leads the community drum circle with over 20 years of percussionist experience and a long-lived passion for this particular mode of expression that he sees as a way to bring together communal unification based on self-love and a group of happy people who are just looking to have some fun.
Tom Mitchell (left) and Danny Dhillon (right), both from Fallbrook, have an improvised musical moment together while others join in relaxed, content and “in the pocket” during the drum circle that regularly meets at Village Square downtown at least once a month.
A unique percussion instrument that adds a beautiful sound when everyone plays in unity.
