Issue 18, Volume 9.

Musicians Workshop is proud to present the Temecula Vintage Singers in concert. The southwest county’s master chamber chorale since 1994 will perform the Brahms Requiem on Saturday, May 14, at the Renaissance Estates in Temecula. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25. For reservations and information, please call (951) 678-2517. Tickets are available the Rancon office, located at 27740 Jefferson Ave.

The Brahms Requiem is one of the great masterworks of the sacred choral repertoire. It is not only a rewarding musical experience but a powerful form of spiritual enrichment. Brahms called his work a German Requiem because he wrote it in his native language, not Latin, to appeal to all of his countrymen. For the same reason, the Vintage Singers will perform the work in English. Unlike most composers before Advertisement

and since, Brahms did not follow the standard requiem mass text but instead searched the scriptures for passages that placed an emphasis on solace and comfort for the living, along with reassurance that those who have died are moving to a better place. These verses are set to music, which varies from contemplative and reassuring to gently questioning to thunderously triumphant.

The soloists will be Moira Stern, soprano, and Steve Phelps, baritone. Stern is new to the group this year and is an internationally known harpist as well as a classical singer. Phelps is a longtime member of the group and is active in many musical endeavors in the Temecula Valley.
