Friday, October 19th, 2007. Issue 42, Volume 11. Murrieta-based punk band My Last Revelation stands out in a crowd. Pricilla Drewry, the band’s vocalist, is a female; a rarity in a scene driven by testosterone and angst. Though the band formed less than a year ago, it has T-shirts, original song sets, an EP, frequent performances and a small army of fans. The musicians have proven that they are driven, though usually by their moms, because their ages set them apart from the crowd; they range from 13 to 15 years old. The musicians may be little, but they play big venues. They released their first EP earlier this month at the Temecula Valley Music Festival, and now they are rehearsing for an Oct. 21 performance at the Cahuilla Creek Motocross Park. They will play during the Race for the Cure event, which will benefit breast cancer research. Being a little different works in their favor, said Pricilla. Recently, they won an honorary mention at the Murrieta Battle of the Bands – which says a lot, considering they had to beat out more than 30 other bands just to compete. The Valley News talked to them about the power of being different.
Valley News: Do you get different reactions from fans because you’re a girl? Pricilla Drewry: It is different, because I get these little girls screaming for us because I’m the only girl [in a local band,] and they don’t see that a lot. I also catch the boys kind of staring at you every now and then, and that’s different than if you have an all-boy band. So there is a very different reaction Advertisement
Valley News: Does having a female singer change people’s expectations of how the music will sound? Jared Miller: Usually when I tell people we have a female singer they go, "Oh, that’s interesting." They don’t go, "Girls can’t sing," or anything like that. I sure don’t think that’s true; Pricilla’s an amazing singer. And [without her] I don’t think we’d be as unique, and I don’t think people would look at us as unique because it’s not unique to have a guy singer. A whole bunch of bands have that around here.
VN: How does being different help you? PD: I always hear people say, "Oh, yeah, My Last Revelation – isn’t that the one with the girl in the band?" It’s easier to pinpoint us. JM: And plus, I’ve heard people say, "Wow, you guys have a female singer? I might want to go check you guys out."
VN: What do you think of playing the big venues, like the festival or the Race for the Cure? JM: I think they’re great because you get a lot of exposure. A lot of people hear you, including booking companies, who may want to book you. PD: It also exposes us to other groups that we can compare ourselves to. We can examine the other bands, and that helps us as a band to put together a more professional performance. We need that exposure to grow.
