Answers sought in Temecula shooting

Old Town Temecula’s most jarring clash in years – a shooting last week that left one man dead, another wounded and an off-duty Costa Mesa police officer under investigation – has rattled the city’s historic business district.

Unlike the drawn-out skits performed by pretend gunfighters, the crackle of gunfire that followed Temecula’s annual spring car show was sudden and deadly.

Yet its aftermath stretched several days, as Old Town merchants continued to dissect the incident while grieving family members criticized the officer’s actions and participated in a widely attended vigil at the shooting scene.

"It will affect all of Old Town," Dennis Frank, a longtime Temecula business and community leader, said Tuesday as he ate lunch at the restaurant where the deadly confrontation began. "It will take quite a while to recover from it."

Frank had attended the spring Rod Run event days earlier, saying streets were jammed and that restaurants and others that feature outdoor drinking patios were crowded with customers escaping the afternoon sun.

Frank said he sympathizes with the restaurant’s owners, who not long ago purchased the place from longtime owners and recently completed renovations and obtained permits to serve alcohol in the covered outdoor patio.

"In a way, it’s a no-win situation," he said.

The shooting has drawn widespread media coverage and resident interest.

More than 180 readers, including friends or acquaintances of the man killed, posted anonymous comments on a newspaper Internet site within days of the shooting.

The commentators have questioned the actions of the combatants, speculated whether any had consumed too much alcohol and wondered if enough city police were in Old Town after the popular vintage car show ended.

Some commentators have questioned whether the off-duty officer acted in self-defense or was too quick to use deadly force.

The Saturday night, March 8, confrontation between a group of restaurant patrons and the off-duty officer, a 10-year veteran of the Orange County agency, began in an outdoor seating area of the Bank of Mexican Food, a two-story historic building at Main and Old Town Front streets, according to a Temecula police press release.

The 7:20 p.m. confrontation spilled across the street where, according to Temecula police and onlookers, five shots were fired, killing 30-year-old Shaun Adam Vilan and wounding his friend, Taylor Willis, 22, both of Temecula.

Willis and the Costa Mesa officer were both transported to Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment of their injuries.

Willis, who reportedly suffered two gunshot wounds, was admitted to the hospital.

The officer, who has not been identified, was treated and released after suffering head injuries that required six staples to close, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

The shooting scene has become a makeshift memorial as dozens of candles and flower bouquets have been left there.

A vigil held there Tuesday night attracted more than 200 people and included remarks by family members.

Some of the speakers praised Vilan’s conduct and downplayed his past, which includes assaults committed about a decade ago that ended with felony convictions for him and three other defendants.

Some friends and family members said a man touched the rear of one of the women in Vilan’s group while they were gathered on the restaurant patio.

The man, later identified as an off-duty police officer, apologized when confronted by Vilan, friends and relatives said, and explained that he had mistaken the woman for his sister.

They said the man, part of another group, later waited for them outside the restaurant with a pair of companions at his side.

Manny Wilson, a friend of Vilan who was present during the incident, said the dispute quickly turned deadly.

"It was chaos. There were people running everywhere screaming and crying," Wilson said in a later interview.

He said he pulled Vilan’s 7-year-old son, Dillan, to safety and that he and Vilan’s brother were questioned by police after the shooting and released.

Wilson showed a reporter his hands and face, which did not feature any visible cuts or bruises, to indicate he had not been fighting.

State law allows police and other law officers to carry concealed weapons while off duty.

A Temecula police news release stated that the off-duty officer had "shot the two suspects…"

It did not indicate that any other weapons had been found by investigators.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates Vilan and others attacked the off-duty officer from behind Advertisement

and he was soon at their mercy.

"There was a fight. That’s concrete," said Detective Jerry Franchville, a spokesman for Temecula police. "Witnesses heard the officer identify himself as an off-duty cop."

No charges have been filed against the officer, who also faces an internal investigation by his own police department.

The shooting and the unfolding investigation will be etched in Old Town’s contemporary annals, but the boxy, two-story yellow building has long been a stop on historical walking tours of the quaint commercial district wedged between Interstate 15 and Murrieta Creek.

The building was the scene of a noted bank robbery in August 1930 in which Michael "Jerry" Diaz quickly fled town with about $2,000. He was pursued and captured after a hail of gunfire.

A section of tables is placed in the bank’s original vault. Lettering above the entrance states: "First National Bank."

The restaurant anchors Old Town’s busiest intersection. In the same block is the city’s $11 million community theater, which opened behind a refurbished historical building in October 2005.

Christy Puma, who owns and runs the restaurant with her husband, was guarded in her remarks on Tuesday as to how the confrontation began and subsequently escalated.

She said her husband, Craig, was seeking legal advice on what to say and how to proceed following the shooting.

"There’s a lot of questions," she said.

"It was very scary. I can tell you that," she said, recalling how she dropped to the ground and a child was shuttled into the restaurant’s indoor storage room after the gunfire erupted across the street.

She hoped the shooting would not taint the Rod Run.

She said she spotted undercover officers on patrol during the vintage car show and that police arrived quickly, within five minutes, after the shooting occurred.

Some nearby merchants said the streets had thinned of event visitors by the time the shooting occurred, and most stores in the area had closed or were closing.

They said motorcycle police continued to patrol Old Town streets after the car show formally ended at 4:30 p.m.

The annual car show is sponsored by a local nonprofit group formed mostly of vintage car and truck owners and enthusiasts.

As in past years, Temecula paid the law enforcement costs of the event, which was expected to attract 55,000 to 60,000 people.

In a February agreement with the event sponsors, Temecula set aside $33,467 to underwrite police, public works, fire protection and other municipal costs, according to city documents.

Of that amount, $16,517 was earmarked for event police patrols and operations, records show.

Temecula provided $31,602 for the 2006 spring car show, according to city records. That amount included $15,582 for police services, city records state.

Although marred by a street brawl in 1997, the popular event has annually drawn baby boomers and vintage car enthusiasts from a broad swath of inland and coastal communities.

Local bands perform at intersections and food booths and other vendors liven the atmosphere.

Vilan’s mother said she and other family members have often enjoyed the event.

"We do it every year," Karen Crowley said in a Monday interview.

She questions whether the city had enough security on duty as event patrons began to splinter in Old Town while traffic cleared.

She compared the Old Town shooting to a pair of earlier confrontations that netted her son an eight-year state prison sentence.

In those other instances, she said, her son also suffered harsh fallout from a fight he did not start.

Riverside County court records show that Vilan smashed beer bottles in the faces of other men during separate confrontations in 1996 and 1998.

He was hit by a wrench in one of the fights, which spawned a damages lawsuit that was eventually dismissed.

Vilan was sentenced to eight years in state prison in March 2000 following a jury trial.

Aspects of the dispute were appealed to the state Court of Appeal and later to the California Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case in January 2002, according to state records.

County records say Vilan was five feet, eight inches tall and weighed 165 pounds.

Crowley said her son, who worked as a stock options trader, had turned his prison term into a positive experience.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing while he was imprisoned and was about a year away from receiving a master’s degree in the same subject when he was killed, she said.

Thank you for this very fair and respectful article. Unlike other writers who have reported on Shaun's death, it's clear you did your research with a critical eye and you've done a fine job of reflecting upon a very tragic and sensitive situation. This is responsible journalism. Thank you again! Rest in peace Shaun!

As a friend of one of the men who was assaulted by Shaun more than eight years ago, I have to say I have a hard time having sympathy for an individual who seemed to actively seek trouble. When you live your life in that manner, sooner or later, you run into someone who is going to be bigger, stronger, or as it was in this case, have a gun. Nobody deserves to die, but at the same time, no innocent person deserves to be beaten by a group of men with a clear history of violence.

I wasn't there but I have a daughter who knew Shaun. I have listened to the family's side as well as what others say (mostly blogs from people who just make up their minds without waiting for the facts). This seems to be the most honest report I have heard without jumping to conclussions. No matter what happens I feel very sorry for the family and friends of Shaun. The short time I knew and spoke with him he seemed a very decent and responsible person,

I have heard other comments made by people who heard or saw something there. I heard that the officer was being assaulted with a bar stool?? Or something?? Either way , it's a very unfortunate situation. But, Like Anneke, I would have to agree, sounds like someone with a "hot -head" finally got himself into something, that he ultimately paid for with his own life. I hope the officer is ultimately found to have acted in self defense.

I do believe that if you look for violence you will eventually pay the price. However, the officer also seemed to be a Bully looking for trouble. He was upset by what happened in the restaurant and could have walked away and no one would have been hurt. Instead, he waited outside knowing he had a gun and that is what ultimately initiated the shooting. Is that really self defense? No, he was just as much a hot head as Shuan and was ultimately the one that should have known as a police officer how to handle this situation by reporting it to the proper authorities instead of being a vigalante for his own hurt feelings. He needs to pay for his crime also and think next time before his actions led to the death of a 5 year olds dad.

There have been a lot of bad incidents in the last few months. Temecua just isn't what it used to be? Still, if you go looking for trouble and find it? Well, don't look for sympathy when you get what you deserve? And , why would anyone go lookin for trouble with their kid tagging along? Not the time or the place to stage a scene like that??Sorry, but , Shaun should have acted his age??

FIGHTING IS NOT THE ANSWER , BUT WHEN A DRUNK MAN SEXUALLY ASSAULTS A WOMAN, A FIGHT IS GOING TO OCCUR. THAT MAN THAT ASSAULTED THE WOMAN KNEW HE COULD GET AWAY WITH MURDER. HE WAS UNTOUCHABLE BECAUSE HE HAD THE RIGHT TO USE A GUN AND NO ONE ELSE COULD. HE CAN GROPE A WOMEN AND PULL HIS GUN OUT WHEN SOMEONE GOT UPSET ABOUT IT. HE WRONGFULLY SHOT A MAN TO DEATH. SHAUN DID NOT DESERVE TO LOOSE HIS LIFE. THAT POLICE OFFICER DID NOT DESERVE THE RIGHT TO USE HIS WEAPON WHEN HE WAS CLEARLY INTOXICATED. THE PRESS CAN RELEASE INFO ABOUT SHAUNS PAST BUT THEY WONT EVEN RELEASE THE NAME OF THE MAN THAT MURDERED A MAN AFTER SEXUALLY MOLESTING A WOMAN, ALL BECAUSE HE IS AN "OFF DUTY" POLICE OFFICER! AND HE IS NOT IN JAIL AND HAS NO BAIL AMOUNT SET . IF I DID THAT I WOULD NEVER HAVE MY FREEDOM AGAIN. I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST COPS BUT THIS IS CLEARLY UNJUST! GOD BLESS SHAUN VILAN AND HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS, ESPECIALLY HIS SON DILLON ,THAT HAD TO WATCH HIS DAD GET MURDERED BY A POLICE MAN!

Thatcher, were u there? Yes, Dillon was there, but his father took him far, far away before he assaulted the officer. The officerrr was protecting more than his life. He was also defending two young men that were with him. The officer was not "drunk" he is a responsible police officer and father. Police officers are entilted to a life, having fun, drinking, playing pool. If this had of been one of your friends/child that was with this officer on that night, I am sure you would be thanking this officer. Please just do not crusify someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. HE WSA DEFENDING HIMSELF AND HIS PARTY AGAINST A NOW KNOW FELEN.

This whole incident is just awful and justice needs to come down on that cop. Drinking and carrying a gun do not mixed and I am sure there is department policy on this. Shame on the people making awful comments about the young man who worked so hard to turn his life around only to be murdered in front of his son, by some jerk who carries a badge. All he wanted to do was protect his female family member from a pervert. Open your eyes Murrieta/Temecula our cops are disgraceful and so is our DA's office. Don't believe everything you read in black and white try thinking for a change!

I think that this great undercover officer just saved the state a lot of money putting Vilan back in jail. He was obviously still a violent criminal and had anger issues...why couldn't he just accept an apology and forget the minor incident and not go after the "man?" (who later turned out to be an "identified" off duty officer) I think his relatives comments on what put him in jail the first time and about his appeals being dismissed says everything about who Vilan was and what his personality was about...a bad apple that wasn't near change.....Temecula is a GREAT city and anyone comparing the auto event to this crime is out of their mind! Get a life people...bad people who hurt good people and commit crimes sometimes get what's coming to them. Again, saving us taxpayers a lot of money and time in the long run. God bless our peace officers!

Anneke - "Nobody deserves to die, but at the same time, no innocent person deserves to be beaten by a group of men with a clear history of violence."

I agree with this comment. One has to consider the other outcome of this story, if the officer was assaulted and refrained from using his firearm. What a different story this would be if it were titled 'Known assault felon attacks and kills off duty police officer in drunken altercation'.

Maybe bringing up his past isnt the fair thing to do, but if he had a negative past, wouldnt he be working to improve that by avoiding fights like this? Supporters suggesting that him attacking another person over a easily dismissible issue was the right thing to do, despite previous failures to make proper judgement, seems to show he was looking for violence and eventually found more then he was prepared for.

I just found out that a childhood friend of mine who I've found more than once now to be the victim of circumstance has past his physical life now for a new spiritual beginning,( God bless his son Dillin and his friends and family) I found Shawn to be a good spirited youg person with humor and drive, enough drive to endure the prison system and much more. Everybody has the ability to be provoked including officers of the law,( which have some of the highest rates of covered up domestic violence incidents) Pros. and Cons aren't we all. Best wishes and love to all concerned from March 8'th 2008 May we all learn to love and carry on in a better manner than we can sometimes be subject to. Shawn you were great in my book.

After meeting Shaun and seeing him act like a fool I have to say this. All of Shauns friends are idiots, in real American honest citizens carry guns so they can kill these type of people, Shaun is lucky he didn't get killed in 96 or 98. Hopefully all of his friends and family move out of the area after this. Temecula is a great city, but people like Shaun and his friends make me embarrassed to say I am from Temecula.

This is just a horrible situation. I can't speculate on what is right and wrong because I was not there and I have not been presented with court determined facts. With that being said, I pray for Dillon. I pray he doesn't grow up hating authority due to some one's ignorance of putting down all cops. I pray he will have God's grace to carry him thru life now that he has lost his father. And I pray he doesn't follow in his father and grandfather's footstep. Hopefull this 7 year old boy will have a better chance in life.

(independant witnesses have already backed that up),And , Both the owner of the Bank resteraunt and , server, did not report any drinking, or intoxication with the officer. That's just what was reported in the papers. ? They still haven't given any results of said blood test?

Im sorry for the family loss, but at the same time I feel the world is safer without people like shaun and those other suburban trash that followed him around (brad, vern, ect.) I am a long time resident of Temecula. Temecula is not going down the tubes as some people are stating, Temecula is growing. I have lived in the best parts of LA and Orange counties and believe me I moved her to get away from especially Orange County. From what I have read in the newspapers, Shaun had a violent temper and had been in trouble because of his violent temper. From what I read in the newpapers, the Costa Mesa officer possibly was drinking the day of the incident. When you get an angry, violent young man and his friends together and an off-duty police officer carrying a concealed weapon, well we have all seen the results of what can happen. Shawn has paid the price for his actions that day and the off-duty Costa Mesa officer should pay the price for his actions. Under no circumstances should the off-duty officer have carried a concealed weapon if he was out drinking with friends or if he was in a establishment that served alcohol. The only problem that I have at this point is that I hope the police do not cover up the blood alcohol level of the off-duty officer. There a a lot of good police officers out there but there are also a lot of police officers that have a cocky cop above the law attitude.I keep waiting to see if the blood alcohol level of the Costa Mesa officer is released. If he was drinking he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, for murder.

For those who don’t know me my name is Darryl on march 8th 2008 my life was changed like many others I lost a dear friend let me give you my story of this person that a lot of you are leaving negative comments that didn’t know my dear friend Shaun Adam Vilan I forturnally I met Shaun in a unfortunate time of are lives I met him CDC-CTF- Soledad prison at this time I met Shaun in dorm 7 level one south yard Shaun was all of 5’8 165 pounds and soil rock iam 47 6’5 and 265 pounds next to Shaun I felt protected under any circumstance that might have raised in the violent place I met him. How ever Shaun was a abouslt success story he was not a instigator but a negotiator weather it was race on race or a race conflict Shaun presents calmed the setaunion I seen Shaun finish 3 coast college course with a 4.0 grade average he personality help me with math and would lend me his cd’s or tapes so I could loss myself for the moment in the place we were. Shaun’s C-file will show that his life was going positive from a very negative. He was loved and respected by all staff and all other races of inmates that he came in contact with. I spent 3 years which seemed like a life time on the same yard as Shaun he was like a roommate we would share stories of are family are friends and are lives he was one of the very few that when I lost my mother comforted me Shaun truly didn’t deserve to have his life cut short under the circumstances that have came to be. His family and friends and loved ones didn’t deserve to have to say goodbye on March 26th of 2008. My understanding has come to me on March 8th six off duty police officers have been drinking at the same diner that Shaun and his friends were at. When a off duty officer from Costa mesa rudely and lewd conduct slapped one of Shaun’s best friends wife on her buttocks the officer upon learning it was not the person he thought he said “ I thought you were my sister” must have been more then a couple beers hu? I believe the public should be giving the truth on what the officer’s blood alcohol lever was. I also would like know a man with a badge why he decided to be judge and jury and why his friends the 5 other off duty officers did not contact local attorenty when there so called buddy was aligned being attacked what happened what happened to an officer wounding this officer meant to kill. If that was any civilian you can bet they’d either be sitting in county jail with no bail or no less then a million dollar bail but this man is on paid leave. Well Shaun’s family and friends and child are grieving over such a tragic lost. For those of you who didn’t know Shaun and wrote negative comments shame on you his 7 year old boy witness his death imagine the respect of authority his child will grow up with. I could go on and on but hopefully I’ve shed some light on the Shaun I knew he was my friend I loved and respected him and I thank god I meet him and his family/friends and I hope his friends and family will stay in contact with me together we will do for justice to prevail god bless you Karen family and friends my deepest sympathy to you may my loving friend r.i.p

It's unfortunate that those who knew or admired Shaun are so, biased in this case as to completely blame the cop for all this, and Shaun was just a crusader of justice ?? I mean after all , someone has to put an end to all this rampant ass-slapping going on?? I have just one question to everyone who is so excited about the idea of this cop having been intoxicated. Even though all the "INDEPENDANT" eye witnesses have stated that he was not drinking at the restaurant, nor did he appear to be drunk. Does it really make any difference at all if he had consumed alchohol?? It still would not change the fact that all the witnesses have backed up his story of self defense. He was attacked from behind by Shaun and his group. He was bashed in the head with a metal chair. He was then struck multiple times by punches and kicks from Vilan and his group. All the articles I've read in every paper have backed that up ,based on the witnesses. So , if you were in this situation, you mean to tell me that you wouldn't be in fear for your own life?? I can only imagine how differently things would have turned out if the officer had been knocked uncontious? There's no telling how badly injured he could have been? Or even killed. Not that his past has anything to do with this case, but, based on what I read about him, Shaun probably would not have walked away from a defenseless person knocked out cold. My own personal belief is that they would have wailed on this guy relentlessly!!! Amazing, how such an "intoxicated" individual had such precision aim when forced to draw his weapon? Oh, but wait there were children present, he could have struck innocent people on the street??!! But, he didn't, and I don't think he would have done what he did if he thought bystanders would have been struck. Did Shaun deserve this?? Of course not! No one deserves to die in a meaningless dispute over something as trivial as this. Was the cop justified in drawing his weapon and shooting in self defense?? Well only time will tell, but, I'd like to meet the prosecutor who thinks he can convince any jury of it!!

Where is the investigation going? No word, no name of a shooter? If it is so clear cut for the Costa Mesa Cowboy that he is innocent, then where is the proof? Where is his Tox screen? They have DUI tox back a heck of a lot quicker than this.... questions and questions... no answers... are they inventing answers? If the cop is so innocent, then prove it............. Put him in a cell next to Graves, he likes to shoot his gun while drinking also.

Reading everyone’s comments about how he deserved this, was a terrible human, etc... Is very disappointing. I didn’t know any of the parties involved but this is my own rant from the perspective of a good hearted person:
The value of a human life is completely disregarded by many. Let’s remember that this was someone’s, son, father, brother, and there is nothing but disrespect to them. The people who say that he deserved this need to take a look at themselves and wonder what made them so cold. People are very rude and I am once again disappointed by the human race and the people why make this earth a sad place to be in. The childhood lesson is often forgotten “If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.” Words are very hurtful.

Seems like this guy did not learn his lesson in jail. The confrontation should have ended in the restaraunt but he had to follow the guy out to the streets to crack him over the head with a chair and beat a man when he's on the ground. This guy got what was comming to such a trouble maker. Sorry if you are a friend of his, but you have to agree.

The complexities of human behavior make it hard to pinpoint reasons surrounding unexpected death. And, no other can degrade the seriousness of each others actions or responses however, it can be proven that resolution is quickly attainable when the honesty of a situations main characters surfaces.

So explain to me again why a brother would sexually grab is own sisters ass?
It is so sad that physical violence perpetuates. No one is ever really safe but, if your arsenal contains the power of foregiveness your chances for another sunrise are far greater. So may our dead rest in peace and the living find it. Hold fast Temecula this too shall pass.....................

2.shaun Vilan attempted to assault back in 96 98, spent 8 years in prison

3. the police officer appologized, even if he was doing something stupid

4. If Vilan had a beef, he should have called the cops

5.based on his fathrs and sons actions, I would say they are both sociopaths...like father like son

I was downtown temecula over the weekend and saw the paper reguarding the shooting in front of the restraunt. I read the artical and read all of the blogs here. Soory but I am on the officers side on this one. several of u stated the ofcr sexualy molested the female. come on all you are trying to do is make the ofcr sound like he was a bad person. shame on you for trying to turn a slap in the butt to sexually molest.

can u remember when u called the police for assistance for whatever the case may be. DID THEY CHECK YOUR BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL. no they didnt, whjy because you are a vict not a susp. thye ofcr was a vict of a crime from some susp who's action's got him killed, thats what happen's when you are a A-hole as many friends of him stated. and what a dad to have his son with him in the bar area of the restraunt during a busy weekend. I glad costa mesa police felt their ofcr was in self defense, good for him. I am sure the ofcr is a good person he has a good job and family there is no reason that he should have died, he did what he had to do.......
when u are a vict of a crime thus being the ofcr (ADW). police

I didn't know either party, but was at the car show with my wife and kids. All I can say is, what the hell is a cop doing at a bar drinking with a loaded gun!? What the hell is a cop doing grabbing some womans a$$? Regardless of Shaun's past history, he did not deserve to be killed as he was only defending himself and his wife/girlfriend. Yeah... I'm just gonna have to say that it seems like Shaun did a stupid. Assaulting a peace officer is a crime, and the guy was brave to identify himself as an officer while being attacked...even though he had to know that it might escalate the beating. He took that chance to try and save Shaun's pathetic life, and Shaun was too dumb to take the offer. Too bad the cop is getting blamed. And really, for everyone who wants tox screens from the cop...he was sober enough to ID himself before shooting. Next time YOU are involved in a profession where it's OK for other people to kill you, see how well you like going armed everywhere and never getting to drink or "cut loose."

It's a sad world we live in where people are "cheering" for the cop who killed a man with his young son watching, and the remarks about him deserving what he got! Shame, shame, shame on you people!! Not one of you can stop for a moment and put yourselves in the shoes of either of these victims, or even try to have any type of compassion for the family, regardless of what is happening to them privately...someone is dead, and before his time...that child that will never know his dad and believe it or not, people that go to prison DO come out and try to make a better life for themselves!! The people who are commenting so maliciously are the ones who have either 1)never been in trouble, or atleast never been caught, and gone to jail for a night. OR 2) never had someone they know get into trouble and go to jail...and those are the ones who are so narrow minded, and probably have no life other than acting holier than thou(and that's why they have no friends), because EVERYBODY gets into a snag atleast once in their lives, maybe not jail, but trouble through their actions, sometime or another.

Forgiveness, folks....compassion for all! Don't think for a moment that just because a man with a badge says he didn't start anything, that it's written in stone...by the way...which one of you men have ever grabbed your "sisters ass"...come on!! That's sexual battery ...they should have had the guy arrested instead of taking it into their own hands, and I'm sure the friends who were there wish they had but hindsight is 20/20. It's just too bad the public actually sees cops as "above" that sort of behavior..they're not!!They're a..-holes just like anybody, and they can be just as corrupt as any criminal out there! Cops SHOULD always be above such behavior, because of the job they have, but, they too, are human and do stupid s... stuff...Either way, no one wins, a young man is dead and a cop will have to explain it and live with it the rest of his life. I don't know about any of you, but if I killed someone defending my own life, it would devastate me and change me forever... and that's what he has to live with...so I feel for him too. But, to all the people who give their "holier than thou" opinions..."spit into the air and it comes back down on you" and "stupid actions get no reaction"..so you'll pardon me if I don't react..this was just my two cents!

What a bunch of baloney all Vilan's "friends" and family are spouting here. If you want to see what kind of person Vilan really was, all you have to do is look here http://www.dui1.com/DuiCaseLawDetail16900.htm

Over eight pages of court documents, outlining multiple violent assaults instigated entirely by Vilan and his "associates". And this doesn't cover all his criminal activities...just the ones brought to the court at this specific time. This isn't a case of "one mistake" or even a couple of "mistakes" made by this guy...he's a lifelong violent criminal, who finally came up against someone who stopped him. Anyone defending this ass here is clearly clueless, in denial, (both of which apparently apply to his family and friends) or just place blame on police officers in any confrontation.

Strange how his name was "Villain". Truly an episode out of "When keeping it real goes wrong." I keep expecting Dave Chappelle to hop out of the background. Stories like these are the reason why good mothers all across the country dont want their kids living their life pretending to be a thug. Because there's always someone out there who's much more qualified. His behavior bought and paid for his outcome. A matter of natural selection. I mean, its not like the guy was crossing the street when a stray bullet hit him. He went looking for trouble and was very successful during that search. Mothers, please learn from this event and take proactive steps towards instilling a proper, respectful attitude in your loved ones. This entire incident could have been easily preventable with a little bit of manners, from both the bullet giver and the bullet taker. Anyways, this is living proof that Karma exists, so, live your life accordingly and be nice to people.

What's the world coming to? Can't a guy just walk up behind another guy, hit him with a barstool, be warned to stop, and continue the beating without getting shot? I guess not this time. What a coincidence that the cop shot a guy who had done this more than once in the past. And it's odd that this cop who was looking for trouble, wasn't looking around for the guys he was looking to get in an altercation with- but somehow they snuck up behind this trouble-maker cop and hit him in the back of the head. Wow, what an architect of self defense murder.

No matter who you side with, this incident has no winners. Even if the shooting was fully justified, the officer has to live with taking a life. Most IMPORTANTLY, if you know and care about someone like Shaun, then do everyone a favor and give the correction they need. Everyone who knew him was aware of the trouble he'd been in- wasn't it worth giving him some tough love advice? It's obvious alot of people cared about the guy- wasn't it worth being honest with him about his behavior? It's hard to get put in prison for assault these days. You have to be a repeat offender to get time for it. Someone close to him could have saved his life by being honest with him...

I read the same article in the Californian. I find it very hard to believe that the Riverside DA office will even try to prosecute. Even if the officer did over-react. There is no way in hell a jury of his peers will ever convict him!!Even if Shauns past doesn't come out!! It's simply not a prosecutable case!!
