An open letter to community leaders

Friday, August 1st, 2008
Issue 31, Volume 12.

I am a young mother with three children and a husband working in construction. My family came to Temecula when I was 12 years old.

To say that this economy has hurt my family is an understatement. Like most people I don’t go out of my way to tangle with loud obnoxious people but enough is enough.

I can’t stay silent any longer. Businesses are closing everywhere. Gas prices and electricity costs are soaring. California has not approved a solar plant in eight years or a nuclear plant in 22 years even though we added 10 million people since then.

Farmers are losing their land to a rat or a flea. We are losing half of our water supply from the Delta Bay near Sacramento because a tiny fish can’t be relocated to a safer location. We could lose our beautiful avocado groves and our Wine Country and water prices are going sky high.

All of this because of efforts of loud and obnoxious organizations and their misled followers who, despite the facts, give out bad information and scare the public.

I said, I don’t want to tangle with these people but I have to say it: "I support the Liberty Quarry."

It means jobs – good jobs. And no, my husband is not employed by the quarry company but new jobs means future prosperity for our community and businesses.

I have read and heard all the arguments against the quarry and I am sure you have also. I talked to people at the Granite Company and made an educated decision.

The quarry will cut truck traffic on the I-15 and the new technology they will employ will ensure that our children will not be affected adversely in any way. It will bring high-paying jobs to our community and continue our community’s reputation for progress and prosperity.

There will come a time when you just have to take a stand.

Will you as a leader in our community join me in standing up against special interest bullies and their misinformed followers? You may be the next target. We can stand up this time and maybe others will stand up next time.

1600 truck trips a day = "cut truck traffic on the I-15"?

Quite an "educated decision" you made there, Angel. A 2nd grader could have done that math.

And has Granite put down in writing that that those trucks will never, ever, never, never decide to swing north? Guess we should destroy the Rainbow overpass just to be sure.

The community leaders are already doing the right thing, which is the exact opposite of what you're asking.

Finally, if being a special interest "bully" means that I have a special interest in my children's health, preventing housing depreciation, etc...Then call me Biff Tannen.

Angel, I feel for your situation, but remember, this quarry is a 75 year commitment. Or shall I say, a 75 year curse on our beautiful valley.

If you want to see what a quarry is like near a residential area, check out the quarries near Dos Lagos and Corona.

As for what you said about our water infrastructure, some home developments in this region were delayed due to lack of available water even before the housing bubble burst.

And guess what they are going to use to keep the silica dust down... yup, WATER, and lots of it! They will be spraying it while the conveyors are operating. They will be spraying precious water on the mounds of dirt and gravel. Imagine, thousands of gallons of water not only going to waste, but becoming polluted as well.

Oh, and the deal about the trucks? A quarry is a truck MAGNET. You think they send them away? HA! And I shudder to think how the quarry traffic will affect business at the truck scales.

Think about the polluted air your three innocent children will be breathing, along with the increased asthma and arrested lung development before you say "I support Liberty Quarry"!

So, a company committing taxes and jobs to the Temecula area for 75 years is a negative?

As far as water goes, they will be spraying it to keep the dust down. As is their right, since they PAY for it. We don't regulate how you pollute with your water, who are you to tell them how they can use the water?

What about the quarries near Dos Lagos make you so upset? Is it that their visible? From what I understand the new project is not even visible from the roadway...

Polluted air? Data please? Are you telling me the air near Dos Lagos is more polluted? Do you have DATA to show that?

I support Liberty Quarry - down with SOS.

To Angel, I am also a young mother- of 4 young children and my husband is a mechanic. Thanks to God's continual blessings, we are provided for even though it is tight. I encourage you to google the North American Union, the Amero dollar, Ron Paul, 1913 Woodrow Wilson's signing our country over to the "Federal" Reserve system, etc. to have a lot of understanding on what is going on in this country that is really causing this economic breakdown. You sound like an intelligent person in search of truth, so I thought if you had not investigated these things, they might prove intersesting to you. Take care, sincerely, Leah.

1) Most of the financial benefit will go to the COUNTY if Temecula is unsuccessful in its bid to annex the land. The quarry will create a relatively small number of jobs which will most likely be filled by people who already work for Granite.
2) Sure, they pay for the water, but it is that much LESS for the residents of Southwest Riverside County and North San Diego County. And what becomes of the polluted water?
3) I ever said ANYTHING about the air quality at Dos Lagos, but was implying how UGLY it was, how it affects the property values in the area and the Quality of Life for residents in the region. That quarry makes the area look very industrial.
4) Just because it can't be seen from the road during the day doesn't mean it won't be seen at night (i.e. lots of high intensity lights) or that the blasting won't be heard by both residents and the surrounding wildlife.
5) Why the HECK would you put something like this adjacent to a wildlife preserve?! And it's next to one of the last free flowing rivers in Southern California! Do you want the Santa Margarita River to look like the Los Angeles River?

you people resounding to angel are acting as if this is a sincere letter. like all granite crap, it is manufactured. no one with angel's problems gives a hoot about granite. nobody is for it. why isn't angel writing and applauding the city council for the most economically sound city, with the most solid job base, of any in the county in these difficult times. Or about the generosity and help that is available to her by the most genuine and compassionate people of any city I have ever been in. Because doing that will do her about as much good, if her situation was real, as taking the time to write that emotional pabulum about granite. angel, do something about something relative to your situation, you are wasting valuable time and effort if your situation is as you say. granite doesn't care about you, temecula, our children or anything, but beating out their competitors up the road in corona who have enough gravel for a 100 years and because san marcos, escondido nor any other city will allow a gravel pit in thier back yard.

Geeze Chris P., I'm amazed you could remove your fingers from the fat cats wallets long enough to type that. What is your agreement with them? You gonna get something in return?

To no name (greg m), What is my agreement with who? Wouldn't the fat cats be granite? It's ok, you can tell us, no one knows who you are:)

People who are against the gravel pit have a reason, they may be wrong, but they have an easy to understand reason to be concerned. You on the other hand have no reason to be for it except....$$$$. Just like the power lines which you tried to sell. nothing wrong with being for something because it benifits you, just say so and stop the bs about a gravel pit benifiting Temecula and improving air quality. you better come up with a better campaign or they better hire someone with a better track record in the PR department.

I had been planning on buying a home in Temecula. When I read about this I immediately stopped looking. Traffic on the 15 had been the biggest delay in my buying out there near family. The thought of 1500 more trucks daily spraying my windshield with gravel was the final straw. I will not look until they cancel this fiasco. Has anyone found out who took Union money for their vote? Who can we recall?
