Friday, January 9th, 2009. Issue 02, Volume 13. Story Last Updated : Sep 10th. A clinic specializing in medical marijuana treatment has opened in Temecula. This is the first time such a clinic has opened in the Temecula Valley. On Oct. 11, Alternative Care Clinics (ACC), a San Diego-based medical group, opened an office on Enterprise Circle. The clinic looks like any other medical office except for a statue of Buddha sitting on a shelf in the back of the waiting room. Magazines on alternative healing sit around the reception area. "The doctors who work with ACC aren’t your typical doctors who want to shove pills down your throat," said Jonathan Arbel, ACC’s director of operations, as he poured himself a cup of tea. "They try to find a more holistic approach." The clinic, which operates by appointment only, offers evaluations to explore whether a medical marijuana treatment plan is right for their patients. The clinic requires its patients to bring in a Californian identification and all medical documentation showing marijuana could benefit them. The doctor goes over the documents and decides whether the patient qualifies. The patient and doctor then work out what the clinic calls a "treatment plan" and the doctor writes a letter of recommendation in place of a prescription. The types of conditions that qualify a patient for the use of medical marijuana include cancer, anorexia, AIDS, chronic pain, spasticity, glaucoma, arthritis and migraines, according to an ACC information packet. According to Arbel, the term "prescription" does not apply to medical marijuana. ACC issues a card to their patients as evidence they have a letter of recommendation. The card is designed to assure police the holder has a legal right to possess marijuana. The card states a phone number police may call to reach ACC’s automated 24-hour confirmation service. Using this service, a police officer would be able to confirm whether the card holder is a legitimate medical marijuana patient. California law allows a patient to grow at least six mature cannabis plants – or 12 immature plants – and possess at least eight ounces of dried marijuana, according to an ACC information packet. ACC goes to court frequently to defend its clients, Arbel said. "We take that responsibility seriously," he said. "It’s amazing how a letter from a doctor can stop somebody from doing some serious jail time." In addition, the clinic educates the patient about the laws regarding marijuana’s medical uses. The clinic does not sell marijuana or keep any at the office, Arbel said. Smoking is barred in the clinic as it is in other medical offices, said Arbel. He leaned on his desk and smiled as he talked about what he thinks Advertisement He speculated some may visualize a smoking den with beaded curtains and lava lamps. His doctors never encourage a patient to smoke, he said. They encourage patients to use either edible pills or a vaporizer. He lifted up a vaporizer from next to his desk. It was a stainless steel cone with a loose plastic bag attached to the top. The user places the marijuana on the top of the cone and puts the bag over it, Arbel explained as he mimicked with his hands. The vaporizer heats the plant until the THC – marijuana’s active ingredient – evaporates into the plastic bag. The patient then inhales the vapor from the bag. In fact, said Arbel, the clinic has little to do with the consumption of medical marijuana outside of developing the treatment plan. The clinic is barred by law from even telling the patients where they can get marijuana. "I just recommend the patient Google the words ‘medical marijuana dispensaries,’" Arbel said.
Legal status of cannabis In 1996, California voters approved an initiative exempting medical marijuana users from criminal liability for possessing and cultivating marijuana, according to department of justice documents. In 2003, the state legislature enacted additional legislation to ensure police refrained from arresting or otherwise harassing medical marijuana users. "There’s been a lot of mishandling of the patient population," Arbel said. On Dec. 1, Americans for Safe Access, an organization dedicated to promoting access to marijuana for medical uses, sent out an e-mail announcing a victory for medical marijuana patients in Southern California. On Nov. 28, the e-mail stated, a California state court ruled Federal law has no effect on California’s law making marijuana legal for medical use. The decision took the right away from police to arrest medical marijuana users. On Dec. 1, the US Supreme Court reinforced that decision by refusing to hear an appeal that would undo the California court’s decision. This ruling came as a blow to San Diego County and San Bernardino County authorities. The two counties had been involved in numerous court battles over the legality of medical marijuana. In several court cases, county authorities argued the state law was illegal and contradicted federal law. So far, the counties’ arguments have failed to convince each judge to hear their case. To the medical marijuana-using community, this was a big victory, said Arbel. "This cleared the air and said all state officials are not to enforce federal laws. They’re to enforce state laws," he said. For more information on Alternative Care Clinics, visit www.accsocal.com or call (866) 420-7215.

Its very clear that ACC has their patients rights at the top of their priority list. I have trusted ACC for years and recommend their offices to others who feel they may benefit from alternative forms of medical treatment. ACC has friendly and helpful staff that have kept me informed of my rights as a patient. My hat is off to ACC for being on the front lines of medical marijuana access
Another nutt shop that will be closed down by the people. Get these pot heads out of Temecula!
Ask them one simple question which is. If I get pulled over and taken to jail will your Doctor acknowledge my medical needs in a court of Law? Alternative Care Consultants does not represent their patients they go through Doctors like babies go through diapers.
Pill poppin nutter has a problem with the people providing for themselves marijuana for medical use. They are not talking about potheads moron. The article is about the right of a people who have spoken when they voted it into California law, and the Judges that ruled the medical use is law in California.
your right nutt lets put another cvs or a major drug chain store on the block for all the well to do chopp up ther antidepressints and freebase them huh, get them out of temecula!
I got pulled over. A letter from my ACC doc got me off. I have nothing to complain about. By the way I'm not a pot head and I take offense to being labeled. So Xeth the answer to #3 is yes
The foundation of American society is the Constitution - including the Bill of Rights - and the rule of law. The law in California is that medical marijuana is legal. America - love it or leave it!
If you were going through cancer treatment would you not want to have a some marijuana to help with the pain and nausea. I think you need to get into the shoes of the patient who is using the med as it was intended. It is not about pot heads or Christian Temecula conservatism. It is also the peoples voice and rule of law.
Medical Marijuana is a joke I had a friend go down to a Doctor in San Diego and "complain" that he has pain in his back and his shoulder and guess what he got the drug he wanted and more importantly to him the get out of jail card asd he put it....he was laughing all the way home and guess what he is a pot head! I am sure that Medical Marijuana is good for someone who really needs it but too many pot heads abuse the system and there are too many Doctors who will find a reason to give you what you seak! Get the drugs out of the valley!
Nutt, Even if a few "potheads" get a recommendation, what are they doing thats so wrong to you? They stay home, watch tv, eat snacks, and veg. They aren't committing any crimes. Nobody's dying. Whats the problem other than your nose is in someone else's business. Dont be upset that they might be enjoying themselves more when their high. Not all people have low self esteem and get paranoid when they use cannabis, just the people like you. Do something positive to fill your emptiness, don't project negativity towards what may be someone elses only savior.
Hi there, my husband has terminal brain cancer. I just have to say that if it wasn't for medical cannibus he probably wouldn't still be here today. They gave him 1yr to live and it's been 2 now. We've done all alternative and have stopped tumor from growing. If we would have listened to traditional DCTR"S they would have murdered him with chemo and radiation!!!It's all about their profit folks! So be thankful that we have the most miraculous plant that god left for us because one day you may need it to and it might just save your life! THC OIL IS THE CURE!!!Check out "Rick Simpson's crush cancer with hemp and truth "on youtube.......peace
Why is stereotyping ok when it comes to marijuana? "Pothead" is an insult. Is it true medicinal marijuana dispensaries are banned in Temecula? Isn't outright discrimination?
Show me where God does not want me to use marijuana and how it is hurting anybody with real fact's and i will never smoke again
I've been in Temecula for twenty one years. Medicinal marijuana use is legal. If you can't deal with that, I suggest you move your carpet-bagging butt out of state.
Why dont all you Christian loving loonies accept that GOD MADE GRASS MAN MADE BOOZE who do you trust! Plus research Bill Clinton & Tyson Chicken COCAINE CONNECTION or try Iran Contra. Our Government are the BIGGEST FRIKIN DRUG DEALERS ON THE PLANET. Wake up America we give DRUGS to little Children & inject them with a million BS Vaccines from birth but we want to EXECUTE people who need POT to kill the pain. I know at least 15 people that have died from GOVERNMENT APPROVED DRUGS LIKE ALCHOHOL & TABBACO Yet I have never heard of a SINGLE DEATH Associated with Marijuana. Thank you I rest my Case.
I am looking to make contact w/the clinic in temecula,ca 2 c if medical marajuana might be helpful to me,I prefer to email or snail mail 2 set up an appointment I'm social phobic as well,i don't want to dvulge my disabilities but i am sure I may be a canadate for hel I will soon be 65yrs old,I have never used marajuana prior Thanks motanurse@webtv.net
It's disheartening to actually see such negative posts. Medical marijuana is just that. I see this as a victory for people woth chronic illness who no longer have to fear the stigma that has always been identified with marijuana. I suggest that more residents should fear the meth problem more than anything else, but hey, that's just me, the carpet bagger.
Well, I have used it for sleeping problems under my MMC and I will use it for pleasure as well. I can smoke some pot drop some visine in my eyes and NOT one person would ever know it, but yet, if they did, including a close friend or two they would probably put a huge lable on me. Its wrong to lable and/or judge somebody because he or she decided to smoke some pot legal or not. Oh, and I am a fully grown adult who raised a great family and I will contnue to be sucessful even with a little pot in my life. I can smoke some pot at night and wake up as clean minded as anyone. TRY that with the good ol Bottle of booze. How messed up is it when some guy can get drunk off his a.., still have it in his system and go to any job he wants. With Pot, they still want to drug test you and call you a stoner or a pot head or some other lable that the so called normal people want to call it. You need to worry a lot more about what happens to you or the kids by drunk or drinking people. Please live and let live and the guy who mentioned the other horrible drugs, he is right as well, watch for them over all others... Peace Out!
All you people that talk crap about pot heads in temecula, let me ask you this, how long have you lived in temecula because I have lived here for 28 years so when you say get the "pot heads" out of temecula, did you build this city , did you do anything here but move in and try and regulate everything that happens. Why don't all you move to Utah because you have the same mentality as mormams, so get the .... out of my town |
