MURRIETA - A preliminary hearing in the case of three men accused of fatally stabbing a local pastor's son and injuring his friend was delayed today because the former girlfriend of one of the defendants had issues with self-incrimination. Matthew Alexis Basler and James Wing Fung, both 31, and Marvin Justin Black, 26, all of San Diego, are charged with murder in the Dec. 26, 2008, stabbing death of Chapman University student Ryan Joshua Armstrong, 22, and the attempted murder of his friend, Joel Ross, in an alley behind E.T.'s Bar in Temecula. Basler and Fung are also charged with trying to prevent a witness from testifying. Today -- the second day of a preliminary hearing that began Dec. 12 --witness Casey Grove was about to testify for the prosecution when a defense attorney brought up the issue of self-incrimination in the case. Grove, who was Black's girlfriend at the time of the stabbing, allegedly drove the truck that took the men away from the scene. She has not been charged in the case but has not been granted immunity, either. Riverside Superior Court Judge Timothy Freer ordered a conflicts defense attorney to examine the case and counsel Grove on whether she should testify, and delayed the preliminary hearing until Feb. 18. A preliminary hearing is held to determine whether the evidence warrants a trial. The victim's father, Ron Armstrong founded the Cornerstone Community Church.
Suspects caught in pastor’s son’s murder Police have caught two suspects for the murder of a local pastor’s son. On Dec. 29, police arrested Marvin Black, 25, and James Fung, 29, for the murder of Ryan Armstrong and the attempted murder of Joel Ross outside a bar in Temecula. Police are still searching for another suspect, Matthew Alexis "Matty" Basler, 30. Basler is a white male approximately five feet, nine inches tall with dark hair and a tattoo reading "Anita," on his right ring finger. Ryan Armstrong was the son of Ron Armstrong, the founding pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Wildomar. Joel Ross, the son of Hugh Ross, a well-known creationist author and minister based in Los Angeles, was also attacked. Though badly wounded, Joel Ross survived. On Dec. Advertisement The Southwest Detention Center is holding Black while a San Diego County jailhouse in Vista is holding Fung. Both suspects have extensive criminal records, according to San Diego court documents. Since 2001, the San Diego District Attorney has charged Black with two felonies: stealing a vehicle, for which he was sentenced to serve eight months in prison, and assault with a deadly weapon, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison. In addition, the DA has charged him with two misdemeanors: vandalism and battery. Since 1997, the DA has charged Fung with five felonies and five misdemeanors. The felonies include assault with a deadly weapon, drunk driving, writing bad checks, possessing controlled substances with the intent to sell and possessing controlled substances while on parole. The misdemeanors include drinking in public while under the legal age limit, trespassing and starting a fire, cutting telephone or electricity lines, driving under the influence and buying stolen property. Fung has been sentenced to serve time in prison on at least four separate occasions for periods of time ranging from 180 days to four years. All three suspects are from the San Diego area.
The murder The murder took place on Dec. 26 in the alleyway behind E.T. Lounge, a bar in the 27000 block of Jefferson Ave. in Temecula. Witnesses told police investigators the events leading up to the attack started with an argument between Armstrong and Ross with Basler inside the bar. Basler attacked Armstrong and they began to fight, according to a police press release. During the fight, Armstrong and Basler moved into the alleyway behind the bar. There, somebody broke the fight up and separated the two men and Basler left the bar. A few minutes later, a truck pulled up to Armstrong and his party. Basler emerged from the truck along with Black and Fung. Another fight ensued, leaving Armstrong and Ross suffering from severe stab wounds. Police got a call from a female at 10:45 p.m. reporting the stabbing. At 11:28 p.m. Ryan Armstrong was rushed to Inland Valley Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead. As of Dec. 28, Joel Ross was expected to recover. No further information has been released about his condition.

Sorrow says :Reality, I have read the story, and I do not know any of the suspects nor did I know the vicitims; but from what has been released to the community, the suspects have had a history of violence (both of the two who have been caught, have previously served time in jail for assult with a deadly weapon). I agree that Ryan may not have been all innocent in this situation, but there is no reason for anybody to kill another human. It is wrong on so many levels. From what I have been reading, I do not hear nor see where the two suspects were stabbed either to death or to cause any injuries. They are at fault 100% and hopefully will be taken off of our streets. A New Friend says :Yesterday I attended Cornerstone church for the first time and I watched Pastor Ron provide the church community with a wonderful service. I had no idea what pain and loss he was suffering through until the end. The faith and belief this man has is amazing. For him to have lost his son 3 1/2 months ago and still stand tall and proud with faith just gives me goosebumps. This family should never have had to go through this and they make me want to strengthen my own beliefs and relationship with God. Ryan was at that bar to celebrate a friends birthday and had not been there long. Fung, Black, and Basler got pissed off at him for one of the girls in Ryans group setting a beer on the edge of a pool table!~ Does that warrant taking his life? I think not! Ryan and his group left the bar, went out to the back in the alley where they were parked, and The hoodlums followed them back there. They were not parked in back, they intentionally drove back there! Ryan was a good kid making something of his life and it was stripped away from him by 3 cowards! They will get their just due, but it's sad how in the meantime the Armstrong family has had to suffer this loss! I pity those of you who were friends with these three guys if you call them "good guys"! I saw him yesterday and to everyone else. He didn't call the cops because he was bleeding from his head and eventually passes out from blood loss. So sorry he wasn't able to help the injured party but he was a little busy having his d... head smashed into the ground. As for ryan dying I'm sorry that happened to him. Still it doesn't give any of you the right to spew crap about these guys. Wait till ALL the information comes out in trial before you pass judgement on them. I cant even imagine what it must be like for the Armstrongs! I hope these guys get life in prison or better the death penalty. These guys are some of San Diego's biggest losers. I can't believe they were let out of prison before with their previous charges. And to "Kate" above if your friend Jamie passed out from his head wound, why did he call and tell one of the wittnessess not to go to the police???? Thats kinda odd for somone that was so hurt and innocent. 6:50 am Wed, Mar 3rd, 2010 53. Ex-friend says :I have heard that Jamie Fung has done many criminal acts in his life. Not just the one's on his criminal record. In the many years I've known him he's been arrested upwards of 10 times, gotten away with three times that many crimes. Many of them petty, but the escalation of crimes was obvious to those of us who stopped hanging around him. He has restraining orders, committed arson, stabbed an animal to "see what it felt like", multiple drug arrests and been arrested for assault. I feel for the victim's family. I also feel for Jamie's family. His little brother is an amazing person, his mom a sweet lady, and his dad was a exceptional officer of the law. I hope justice is served, but nothing brings back a loved one. Both families are devastated, many more friends are saddened. 11:30 am Wed, Mar 3rd, 2010 54.
