Elsinore police arrest eight in prostitution operation

Last Saturday afternoon, Main St. in Lake Elsinore was alive with pedestrians. People milled from store to store, families walked to restaurants and mothers pushed strollers.

What was not taking place, however, was what interested Michael Yates, a sergeant with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Lake Elsinore Station.

Prostitutes who had recently been roaming Main seemed to have abandoned the area.

The Lake Elsinore station has received several calls recently from residents complaining women the callers suspected of being prostitutes were loitering on the sidewalks.

So on March 4, investigators from the station organized and conducted a "solicitation for prostitution" operation.

They conducted it in broad daylight, from 12 to 5 p.m., near the corner of Main and Library Ave.

As part of the program, they placed several "law enforcement decoys," or women who appeared to be prostitutes but were really working for the police department. The purpose, said Yates, was to catch men trying to buy sexual favors from the decoys.

worked. Police arrested eight men in those five hours. "We thought that was a high number – higher than we would want it to be," said Yates.

The suspects range in age from 23 to 91. Five are Lake Elsinore residents, one is a Murrieta resident, one is a Quail Valley resident and one is a Wildomar resident.

The residents mostly came from Lake Elsinore and the cities immediately surrounding it, which is good news in a sense, said Yates. It indicates the city is not reputed as a prostitution hotspot.

The operation was a success, not because it resulted in eight arrests, Yates said, but rather because it deterred men from soliciting women for prostitution.

That is why police conduct these programs, Yates said. "It’s a program that needs to be done to keep everybody honest," he stated.

Anyone with information regarding this operation is encouraged to call Investigator Tina Woodard at the Lake Elsinore Police Department at (951) 245-3358.

Wow, a 91 year old perp. OMG I feel so safe knowing crime in Lake Elsinore is now firmly under control. Maybe now we can go after people smoking in parks, or high schools kids smoking in the bathrooms, and then let's go after the jay walkers. Good job, thanks for keeping us all safe

91, is pretty old ...even to be driving after prostitutes!!! Man, couldn't those cops have let that guy get a free pass this time!!! Maybe the cops should go after the gang bangers and taggers that continue to ruin the city with their spray paint!! Hell, I wouldn't even mind if they used deadly force!!!

Please continue to clean up Ellsinore in any way possible! Prostitution is always closely associated with drug abuse, thanks LEPD for doing a good job. Hopefully one day LE will loose its stigma of being a DIRT BAG city!

These people need to be reminded about the spree killing of prostitutes back in the early 1980's. I think pretty much that was the right time. This act of prostitutions puts every one in danger. The police should nip it in the bud.

when you have hookers bringing thier johns(whatever thier age) to your neighborhood(right across my street) and doing the acts in their car, at all times of the day or night, it does become quite a concern for us. good work, I say!!!

i think that taggers are not a big concern but gang bangers are the LEPD shouldent be spending their time tracking down taggers its easy to clean paint but its not easy to clean the actions of the people involved in this so PLEASE LEPD start being more concerned about more serius crimes and stop wasteing time going after stupid kids with paint

People are so bored in this town that all they want to do is look around and talk there smack on people like the police, when what the heck are you doing with your time um waiting it, instead get out there and help clean this city up if your so angry at where it's going!! They are doing awesome!!

The only people who care about prostitution are insecure women who treat their men like sh#t or Christian zealots. I care about gang-bangers and illegal aliens. How about a sting operation that will target criminals that are truly screwing this country up!

It is a proven FACT cops only go after MONEY this is a lot of money they will collect, For something that should not be a crime.
They need to find all of the stolen items in the city.
