Music Fest comes under scrutiny for coarse language

A popular music festival drew some criticism last weekend.

More than 1,898 music fans attended the Temecula Music Fest, which took place Friday and Sunday and featured more than 70 performances.

Despite the popularity of the event, some parents have said it was profane and offensive.

They are not the parents of anyone attending the festival, however. They are the parents of children competing in a Little League tournament and a swim meet nearby.

According to a City of Temecula official, numerous parents called the city over the weekend to complain they heard obscene language and subject matter blasting over the festival’s public address system.

On two occasions, musicians did use obscenities, according to Bill Gould, the event’s organizer.

Using obscene language and discussing vulgar subject matter are both barred from the festival’s stages, Gould said. Moreover, the musicians agreed to refrain from using either before performing.

Two performers broke this rule. One was a hip-hop artist who performed on Saturday and the other was a vocalist in a punk rock band that performed on Friday.

Gould declined to name the bands. "I don’t really want to put the bands on blast; I don’t feel it would be fair to hurt [their] reputation[s]," he said.

As soon as the performers broke the rules, the sound technician unplugged the public address system and organizers escorted the musicians off the stage, Gould said.

"You can’t use ‘F’s and ‘S’s at a family park, but when it happens, you can’t take it back," Gould said. "I have a little kid, too. I don’t want Advertisement
that."

The offending musicians have been barred from participating in the event in the future, Gould said.

Some parents have complained to the city that musicians were using foul language on more than those two instances, according to Martin Betz, the city’s cultural arts administrator.

"Some parents are saying it was going on all day; others are saying it happened and then stopped," he said.

The organizers do everything possible to ensure the performers follow the rules, Betz said.

The city will, however, place the Temecula Music Fest on a date next year on which no children’s sporting events are taking place, he said.

A small number of complaints can have a strong influence over the government of a small city such as Temecula, according to Ivan McClain, a local booking agent who helped organize the festival. He worries these people may threaten the festival’s existence in the future.

"If a few soccer moms or a few people in a swim class have some issues, we have 1,500 people going home with a good time and planning to come back next year," McClain said. "We don’t want a couple of bad eggs spoiling the dozen."

The festival was adopted as a city event as part of Temecula’s Youth Master Plan, Betz said.

The Youth Master Plan is the local government’s guiding plan for making Temecula a pleasant place for children and teenagers to live, Betz said.

"[The Temecula Music Fest] gives kids something to do that’s positive on the weekend," Betz said. "This is what kids want to do."

We live in Starlight Ridge across from the park and am surprised to hear that this was a "music" festival. Over the weekend there was a lot more screaming than singing into the microphones over there. I am not a music snob but we had to shut up the house and close windows to keep the screaming out. I was finding myself questioning why they were having this type of performances over at the park which I've always considered very family oriented. This was supposed to be "fun" music? Sounded more like they were trying to incite riots. There was definitely more than two instances of vulgar language which was actually much less offensive to me than the lack of musicality.

Perhaps next year I'll book a room at local hotel to avoid having to listen to that. One of my greatest joys of living where I do is to hear the screams of delight when a child comes around to score a run during baseball games, or when laughter rings out from the pool. Happy family noises coming from that park are a sheer delight...... last weekend's noise was nothing pleasant.

Okay when did parents concerned for their children's exposure to rudeness and obscene behavior become a couple of bad eggs spoiled? Granted Mr. McClain maybe ignorant on how to address parents that express concern, but not everyone that does that is a "soccer mom"!!! Foul language is generally used out of a lack of intelligence, Mr. McClain. Teenagers for whom this event was geared towards have enough vulgarity in their lives to need it at a City of Temecula sponsored event. Consider that Mr. Betz.

We are trying to make an event that the youth and young at heart will enjoy. Fun is subjective based on taste and while some parents might love the wine festival for the old school bands, kids don't, they think its "boring" and "lame". There was a very wide variety of music, much of it was great rock and blues based music, some of it was geared specifically at the teen crowd and the teens want the 'hardcore' sound. I think having a few hundred teens engaged in a safe event at the park is great and what I aimed to do with Friday nights performances - it is certainly better than having kids at a house party or hanging out in a parking lot. If you have any ideas or thoughts about the festival, I would love to hear them. Please email me at info@temeculamusicfest.com.

Thank you,

what are the youth supposed to do who are into music and not baseball? where else can the youth go that is safe and wont disturb anyone? everyone there was very respectful to eachother. no fights no drunk driving accidents. would you rather the kids go up to la where anything can happen or have them be able to be 10 min. away from home while they are at a show?here is no outlet for musicians in temecula unless you play to the older crowd. what would you rather do?

The City of Temecula should really reconsider having this music fest next year! I live near the park and most of my neighbors will definitely be coming forward next year if we get wind of another music fest like this one. I have heard alot of bad things about the people running this!

Bill, I was present on Saturday and the bad language happened on more than one occasion that day. Further more, I busy trying to get my kids out of there when the rapper began his second song. The PA was not disconnected and he was not escorted off of the stage. Also, there was another band that performed that was doing more than shouting obscenities. The singer had his hands down his pants at one point. This was on the pool side stage. So either you are lying or you can't remember. Either way you have no business promoting or putting on that kind of show in a public family area.

As for Ivan, you are the bad egg and your statement, "If a few soccer moms or a few people in a swim class have some issues," is rude and insulting to anyone who has a family, this includes Bill Gould who has stated he has children and does not tolerate that behavior. If this is the case, Bill, why continue to work with a punk like Ivan?

Mike, If you have any questions, feel free to email me with your concerns. We dealt with issues as they popped up, doing the best we could. We had a 3 day fest with no violence, arrests - just a few foul words. While I disagree with the language choices some made, over all it was a very successful event. There will be some significant changes in the format of next years event, MAKING SURE that we don't have the same issues with foul words.

Sue, I can assure you that you must be mistaken, as I doubt you have heard 'alot of bad things' about me and my wife. However, if you believe you have, I encourage you to contact me so I can address the issues directly and clear up any misunderstandings. My contact info is below.
