MURRIETA - One of two Banning men, accused along with a teenageboy in the shooting of a rival gang member, is due in court tomorrow for arraignment.

George Quintanilla, a 22-year-old parolee and alleged gang member, was arrested along with Christopher Lavoie, 18, early Friday after being stopped in a neighborhood near Hoffer and Florida streets, according to Banning police spokeswoman Ginger Perry.

Police were on the lookout at the time for any suspicious activity linked to a shooting a few days earlier in which a documented gang member was wounded, she said.

When they spotted a vehicle that seemed suspicious to them, officers made a traffic stop and recognized Quintanilla, then decided to search the car, Perry said. Because Quintanilla is a parolee, he and his property can be searched without a warrant, police said.

Officers seized an assault rifle and semi-automatic handgun, according to Perry. The rifle had its butt stock removed and barrel shortened, and the serial numbers of both weapons had been altered, she said.

Officers also found high-capacity magazines, bullets for the firearms and gang paraphernalia during the search, Perry said.

Lavoie and the 17-year-old suspect are documented associates of the same gang, she said.

Lavoie and Quintanilla were booked on suspicion of possessing, manufacturing or selling a dangerous weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine, being a gang member with a concealed weapon and tampering with identification marks on a firearm.

Quintanilla was additionally booked for alleged possession of live ammunition with a prior conviction, and Lavoie on suspicion of evading authorities.

The boy was taken to Juvenile Hall, where records on underage inmates are not available to the public.

Quintanilla was being held without bail pending arraignment Tuesday, and Lavoie was released on $5,000 bail and given a June 29 arraignment date, according to sheriff's jail records.
