Did you know that the Thimble Club was the very first service club in Anza? It was started in 1912 by the women of seven families – the Bohlens, Carys, Collins, Courts, Daniels, Drushers, Evans, Meads, Norris, Weatherills and Whismands.

It’s a small world; Mrs. Noah Cary, Mrs. Roe Cary and Mrs. Emily Dalby were the grandmother and aunts, respectively, of current Thimble Club member Alice Hopkins, who still resides on the old Cary homestead on Cary Road (named after her grandfather, Noah Cary).

Anyone wishing to join the Thimble Club can call either President Annie Ashby at (951) 763-1606 or Vice-President Julie Roy at (951) 763-4222.

And don’t worry – you don’t have to own a thimble. The only thimble I own is the thimble pin they gave me when I joined that’s pinned on my apron.

There is no one more inept at sewing than I am; however, I can cut from a pattern and baste and work on fundraisers. All of our profit goes back into the community. We need you!

The May luncheon enjoyed a Cinco de Mayo lunch of enchilada casserole, refried beans, salad and strawberry and pineapple shortcake with whipped cream, all made by chef Barbara Baxter and her cooks, Leanna Keltner, Betty Love, Norah Wright and Jackie Braaten.

Lizzy Ann of Lizzy Ann’s Nursery showed us how to cleverly pot plants in recycled "junk" – most from the swap meet – that you would never dream of using. Her motto is "Reuse, recycle and beautify."

As planters she used an old, old bushel basket, a man’s beat-up boot and a 15-year-old colander in which she planted an herb garden.

The hit of the presentation was an old pair of white panty hose. She had planted beautiful pansies in the top, stuffed the legs with plastic bags and painted black shoes on the "feet." She sat it in a chair for display. It was raffled off and won by a very lucky Pat Clark.

Patricia Greebaum won both the wrapped and unwrapped gifts and Joann Moreno won the $38 from the 50/50 drawing.

The thought for the day was a beautiful thought given by Dottie Vandiver entitled "Mother" in honor of Mother’s Day.
