Story Last Updated : Jul 3rd.

UPDATE: Friday, July 3, 8:45 a.m.

The De Luz fire has now been reported as 100% contained. Rancho California Road has been reopened in both directions between Sandia Creek and Business Park Drive. Authorities ask citizens to drive with caution as fire equipment and personnel are still assigned to the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

UPDATE Thursday, July 2, 9:15 p.m.

TEMECULA - According to Cal Fire information, the De Luz fire is now 75% contained. Full containment is expected by 8 a.m. tomorrow morning ( 7/3/2009).

For travel to and from Temecula from De Luz--Rancho California Road will remained closed between Business Park Drive and Sandia Creek Road and may remain closed throughout the night. Commuters and residents may seek alternate routes through Clinton Keith Road to the north or Mission Road in Fallbrook to the south for travel to and from the De Luz Area.

(Previous Story)

TEMECULA - According to Cal Fire Public Information Officer Captain Fernando Herrera, the De Luz fire is just smoldering now with 40% containment and 94 acres burnt. "Once the fire reached the business park there was very little fuel because there were great fire breaks built into the perimeter of the business park."

"There's quite a bit of clean up work to do with a mop up crew of 160 inmate firefighters," said Herrera. There are still a total of 350 firefighters on scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

TEMECULA- A wildland fire that began at approximately 2:34 p.m. west of Temecula in the De Luz area of Riverside County is now reported to have encompassed 100 acres and is 10% contained. 350 firefighters have responded Advertisement
to the scene.

Rancho California Road is still closed in both directions at Business Center Drive. Several businesses have been evacuated along Business Park Drive between Rancho California Road and Winchester Road. No structures have been damaged as of 5:25 pm, according to Cal Fire.

With winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour, officials say the blaze is moving toward Winchester Road. There are 30 fire engines on scene being assisted by four air tankers and three helicopters.

Firefighters on the scene say the fire is burning in steep, dense terrain in heavy fuel (brush-filled) areas.

All businesses along Business Center Drive were evacuated, but no structures had been affected as of 5 p.m.

The blaze began on the west side of the Temecula Valley (15) Freeway, and smoke was visible from the highway. By 4 p.m., smoke covered all of French Valley and ash was visible in the air.

Agencies working cooperatively in regards to the blaze are Cal Fire/Riverside County, Cal Fire/San Diego, Pechanga Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service/Cleveland, and the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters arrived to find a large spot burning, but it quickly grew to 30 acres, according to the California Highway Patrol. By 3:30 p.m., the blaze was heading east toward Winchester Road, in the wine country.

What if that fire had started on Rancho California Rd going into De Luz and spread west?!! There's really only one main artery into De Luz and that's Rancho California Rd. They need to create a Northern exit that connects to Clinton Keith or one of those roads over there. As it is it's a ticking time bomb because of the dryness and dense foliage.

We went to the McDonald's Playland at the Winchester/Margarita Intersection and ash was raining on us and blowing inside my van when we were trying to leave. We drove down Winchester to the Jefferson Intersection, then headed South on Jefferson towards Overland. We could clearly see flames and billowing smoke. We saw at least one firefighting plane drop chemicals upon the source. Within minutes, after heading East on Overland (approx 4pm), it looked like it was calming down - could see white smoke instead of the black/yellowish stuff - looked like a sulfur color before the plane arrived.

Hey Ridge Park - there are a couple ways out of De Luz - if we had to most here know how to get to Fallbrook or to Clinton Keith. However you are right, if it was moving west it could end up taking off pretty fast and would be difficult terrain for firefighters. Praying for everyone effected.

Not sure how long you all have lived in the area. But in 2007 it was the same thing. Temecula Valley doesn't get news coverage. Channel 3 is all we have...so those of you that are close to the fire...keep writing. Those of you that aren't keep reading, because this and other blogs is as good as it gets for Temecula...

128. Ridge Park Dr says :

Hi Watching in De Luz

I'm aware of Fallbrook exit it just doesn't allow for quick access to a highway or main thoroughfare. It bothers me to think of what an evacuation would like on that two-lane road. When you're dealing with bellows of smoke, traffic jams, livestock trailers, etc... well you understand my concerns. I wish the best for all us Temeculites. Also, is the exit onto Clinton Keith completely paved?

To me this type of blogging is far superior than any news coverage. You get one guy sticking a mic in a couple people faces. Here we dozens have people overseeing this thing first hand from De Luz, the business park, etc and offering their perspective.

Hi Ridge Park Dr...
Yes Clinton Keith is paved. De Luz to Carancho Road to El Gato up to the Santa Rosa Plateau then down to Clinton Keith past Bear Creek. You are right it would unpleasant trip to have to do if evacuated. Or Carancho Rd to Sandia Creek into Fallbrook – but the fire in 2007 that was closed off.

Dean, Deany Boy,

Don't be so delusional!...I am wise :). And although it's flattering, please stop coveting me, I am a man of humility.

And au contraire, you seem to be the fool here. You seem so capable of being able to distinguish between humor and seriousness..so I just can't figure out WHY you don't see that my comments were tidbits of humor as well. If you thought recommending diapers was advise that was genuine, then you need to get out more because that kind of advise isn't the norm.

And I hate to be brash, but you claiming my life experiences are tragically short, is a bit of a judgement on your part b/c, frankly, you don't know me.

Have a great day

The swarm of helicopters has calmed down as well and the sky is almost clear of the black and orange smoke that was earlier reported. Place a chip on #7 and have a good time.

It's nice to know the Village News and the Valley News are available for this blog.

As all with everyone living in Fallbrook, Rainbow, De Luz, Temecula, Murietta, etc., we are NEVER covered by either the San Diego or the Los Angeles news. What gives with that? We are in some sort of warped "No Mans Land". I know San Diego news stops at Poway, which is 40 miles south of me.

If not for this site, we would be struggling to figure all this out, so thanks Julie Reeder and whoever controls the Valley Newspaper.

I don't know what the above story is talking about with "no evacuations at this time". I have a business on Zevo (between PHS/Jefferson & Winchester). The cops would not let me back there (and we're fairly jerky about it) except for one very kind motor cop who took me back to get business records, etc for about 5 mins. They indicated I would not be allowed back til the fire was out. Looks fairly knocked down to me but very smoky/ashy. Still a few scattered cars back there but mostly devoid of life. FYI All - There are actually 4 ways in and out of DeLuz but 3 of them are difficult. Other than the main drag (RC ROAD), you can take DeLuz Rd/Sandia Creek to Fallbrook or you can take DeLuz Rd (dirt rd) in the opposite direction to Murrieta and lastly, you can take a rather treacherous road up to La Cresta.

257. John Calvin II says :

Alright, this is with no exaggeration. I'm looking out my window right now, I only live a couple miles away, and it is cleared up with the exception of some light, hazy, white smoke. All the red, orange, blackish smoke is all gone and where the majority of all that was, there is now blue skys. I'm assuming the firefighters are just cleaning up the rest of it, or they have already done so. Nothing to worry about, it's all good, although I would refrain from breathing in all the ashes.

So calm down everyone, nothing is going to happy.

Temecula was rated one of the top 100 cities to live in. I don't know who was making the comments about trailers, but Temecula is an expensive place to live. And is reminiscent of Orange County now. It's a beautiful city, thank God for the firefighters protecting it.

The fire moved really quick in the beginning. Then it came right down the hill toward the building I work at. We had to evacuate. Down wind, the smoke was thick and very dark. The flames were shooting over the buiding. I felt very confident the awsome fire crews were going to protect the property. From what I hear, buildings are safe.

288. Resident says :

To Chris: I think most of us have been around long enough to remember the days when Temecula was nothing. People moved there because the homes were dirt cheap ($90,000), and they could not afford to live in Orange County. It was a commuter city with no industry. Well, most of us were EXTREMELY smart or EXTREMELY lucky, but our $90,000 homes ended up being worth $800,000. So most of us "poor" folk made a killing on real estate and now live pretty cush lives. But at the time Temecula started to boom, it was considered a lower class (not low class though), blue-collar neighborhood. It is not that the people were low class, but they were not rich......times have changed.

The property values brought in many wealthier people, and the wineries did as well. However, it is still a STANDARD middle class area and I would definitely not consider it upper class. The homes are beautiful, but no different (for the most part) than Orange County. There are pockets of really huge homes, but for the most part, the city is full of track homes. Track homes can be attractive and can garner a good selling price, but bottom line is that they are still track homes. They are not expensive custom homes and never will be.

Don't try to make our area more upscale and classy than it really is. The entire town is middle class now and no longer considered lower class, so be happy we have made it this far. But quit trying to make us look like some of the surrounding areas that are all custom homes and extremely expensive ones.

It may be considered one of the best places to live, but the traffic is bad and the gang problem is worse. People need to do their research before moving here to find the "good" areas, just like any other city.

296. Murrieta Resident says :

I agree with resident. I moved here to give my kids a better life and grow up in a much better place than I did without the gangs and drugs. I noticed the area I'm living in is getting worst due to the homeowners that are renting out their homes. Our neighboorhood use to be quiet and calm now all I hear is cars speeding down the streets with the music blasting from their cars. I know there's not much I can do about it but come on people have some courtesy and lower the music when you drive into the neiboorhoods. We don't need to know when you've arrived...

I work on Business Park Drive luckily I left work early yesterday and missed the fire. God bless everyone especially the brave men and women who service our country every single day to give us the freedom and to live a better life. I just wanted to say "thank you"!

297. Concern citizen said; says :

OMG-On one company close by that area didn't care if employees will suffer breathing problems or lung problems due to the fire heavy smokes. They should have been evacuated and sent the employees home. Some employees went home and some employees were ordered to go back to work at the warehouse. It is insane that those employees stayed 2 hours after their work shift to cover those employees who went home. Common now, if ever these employees got sick and called in from work then your company will suffer and will end up not meeting your client's expectations on non emergency situation. Yesterday wan an emergency situation. Please be concern on your employees health when it comes to fire issues so lawsuits will be avoided. Thank you FIREFIGHTERS for a job well done. GOD BLESS YOU!!!
