A Palm Springs nudist resort will take part in a July 11 bid to set a Guinness world record for the largest number of people simultaneously skinny-dipping, organizers say.

The Desert Sun Resort at 1533 N. Chaparral Road expects to host hundreds of nude people in its three pools at noon that day.

Thousands of other naked people across the United States will also be making the plunge at the same time, said resort owner Elizabeth Young.

"The Guinness World Records organization has just created a new category for the greatest number of naked people to be in swimming pools at the same time," Young said. "Skinny-dipping is a wholesome tradition as old as humanity and frequently honored in art and movies. It celebrates the natural joy of plunging into water without hindrance of clothing."

The world record attempt is being sponsored by the American Association of Nude Recreation.

Young said she expects as many as 20 college students to be among nudists from around the world taking part in the record attempt from the Palm Springs location.

The resort, which bills itself as the largest and newest nudist resort in the nation, is a "family-friendly" facility with strict conduct rules, according to Young.
