Friday, July 3rd, 2009. Issue 27, Volume 9. Lifelong Menifee resident Kortney Cleveland won the California High School Rodeo Association state barrel racing championship at the recent state finals in Bishop. She finished first in the overall event average at the state finals, which were held June 16-21, with a 52.882-second time recorded for three runs. She won two of the three rounds and placed third in the other. "It was a lot of work, but it was definitely worth it," she said. Cleveland, 16, who finished her sophomore year at Calvary Chapel Murrieta High School during the last district rodeo season, will compete in the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) finals July 17-25 in Farmington, NM. The top four finishers in the state competition qualify for the national finals, which will feature more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. The finals are expected to be televised. Cleveland rode 9-year-old Cody in the state finals. "It was pouring rain," she said of the second round of the competition. "My horse ran really good even though it was really cold, really wet." Second place went to Macy Devenport, who lived in Temecula from 2003 to 2005. Devenport, who finished fourth in the District 8 standings, moved to San Pasqual following her Temecula residency. She logged an average of 53.317 seconds in three runs in the state competition. "I’m really excited that it was Macy who got second," Cleveland said after the competition. Cleveland’s short go was also the fastest barrel racing run of the finals. "It was real exciting," she said. Both Devenport sisters Advertisement Macy Devenport also earned the state’s rookie girls’ all-around championship honors. Destri Devenport’s average of 430.5 points in girls’ cutting put her in second place behind state champion Morgan Dewar. Macy Devenport placed 13th in the girls’ cutting event. Destri Devenport won the District 8 girls cutting title and Macy Devenport was third in the district standings. Macy Devenport was third in the district breakaway roping standings and finished fifth at the state finals. That finish makes her an alternate at the NHSRA national finals. Destri Devenport was the District 8 breakaway roping champion, but she finished 14th in the state competition. Menifee’s Amanda Koch placed 18th in breakaway roping at the state finals. While the top four finishers in the state qualify for the national finals, those who finish in fifth through 10th positions are invited to the Silver State championships in Nevada. Romoland’s Chelsey Pulcheon and Koch both qualified for the Silver State rodeo in the goat tying competitions. Pulcheon, who was the District 8 goat tying champion, finished in ninth place to earn a berth at the Nevada competition. Koch, who finished third in the District 8 standings, took 10th place in the state contest. In the team roping event, Macy Devenport and Tyla Treasure placed 16th. Macy Devenport had finished fourth in points among District 8 heelers. She finished in 29th place in pole bending competitions in the state finals after finishing second in district competitions in that event.

Joe Naiman says :Actually we didn't forget to mention Courtney Danylo's title; the information I've received is that she lives in Riverside County but not within the Valley News coverage area. I'll try to find out a specific community of residence for the Danylo family, and if I learn it is within our coverage area we'll add her accomplishments to our stories. ![]() 8:51 am Thu, Jul 23rd, 2009 3. Joe Naiman says :The National High School Rodeo Association national finals information on Courtney Danylo indicates that she lives in Moreno Valley, which is technically not in the Valley News coverage area. We do, however, wish her well in the national finals. |
