MURRIETA - A 21-year-old motorist on parole who fled after fatally striking a woman as she crossed a Hemet street, just two weeks after he'd gotten out of prison, pleaded guilty today to gross vehicular manslaughter.

Jonathon Ryan Patton, whose preliminary hearing was to begin today, also pleaded guilty to hit-and-run with death and admitted a sentence-enhancing allegation that he fled the scene of a crime.

He also admitted to a prior strike conviction in 2006 for discharging a firearm, with a gang allegation and a drug conviction.

Patton struck Barbara Ann Rey with a Chevrolet Blazer on Florida Avenue the night of March 2.

Several motorists tried to follow the SUV but could not keep track of it.

Based on the information from witnesses, police identified Patton, who had been released from prison just two weeks earlier, and used data from his GPS ankle bracelet to confirm he was present when the woman was struck.

Prosecutors did not offer him a plea deal, and Riverside Superior Court Judge Mark Mandio indicated that he would send Patton to prison for 14 years and four months when he sentences him July 30.

"This is ... good ... for the family because it allows them to get some justice without enduring the pain of a trial," said Deputy District Attorney Gregory Garrison.

That woman's life was only worth 14 years and 4 months?! And the animal who killed her is going to spend our tax dollars in prison learning how to be a bigger badder gang banger. What is wrong with our justice system?

Still wearing his ankle bracelet ? I know he is only 21 but he learned nothing from his first jail visit. Maybe he will learn something when he is 31, I highly doubt it.

We have a very stupid so called justice system. It should be an eye for an eye.... If you kill someone then you diserve to die yourself.
