HEMET - A man shot dead on the Soboba Indian Reservation was identified today as a 33-year-old reservation resident.

Benjamin Dee Lindsey was killed at his home in the 24000 block of Poppet Flats Road about 4:40 a.m. Sunday, according to sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez.

Deputies found Lindsey in the residence, which is on Soboba land, and were told that the suspect fled in a pickup truck, according to Gutierrez.

Larry Arres, 24, of Soboba, was spotted on Interstate 10 in Beaumont and a pursuit ensued that led deputies back to the reservation, the sergeant said.

Arres stopped at a residence and ran into the house before surrendering. He was booked into the Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of murder, evading a police officer, possession of a controlled substance and obstruction or resisting a peace officer.

He was being held without bail pending arraignment Wednesday, sheriff's jail records show.

The Sheriff's Department received the full cooperation of the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians in investigating the shooting, Gutierrez said.

The tribe and the Sheriff's Department have had disputes in the past regarding shooting investigations. Soboba leaders have accused deputies of excessive force, and sheriff's officials have cited lawlessness on the reservation.

Recently, a tribal member was tried on a murder charge in the shooting of another tribal member on the reservation on New Year's Day 2003. Jurors deadlocked, prompting the judge to declare a mistrial in Joseph Resvaloso's case.

He is due back in court Aug. 3 for a trial-readiness conference to determine when he will be retried.

No one has disputed that Resvaloso killed Mark Walker, but the defense and the prosecution differ as to whether it was premeditated and deliberate, or self-defense.

According to testimony, Walker was trying to confront Resvaloso because he thought the defendant was Gordon Arres, who is Resvaloso's cousin.

The relationship between Larry Arres and Gordon Arres is unclear, but the Arres family is one of the tribe's extended families.

Last year, Joseph Arres, 36, was shot to death along with his partner, Tamara Hurtado, 29, in a shootout with sheriff's deputies.

A week or so before that shooting, Eli Morillo, 26, was killed in a shootout with deputies.

Morillo's brother was killed in a shootout with deputies a few years ago, which prompted a flareup of tensions between the tribe and the sheriff's department.

The Morillo family is also an extended one within the close-knit clans on the reservation.

Currently three other tribal members are heading toward trial on murder charges.

One of those facing trial for murder later this month is Gabriel Resvaloso, who is accused of gunning down a taxi driver and leaving the body in the reservation casino parking lot.

"Pretty much everyone on the reservation is related to each other in some form or another," said Mike Hiles, information officer for the tribe.

Gutierrez asked anyone with more information on the Lindsey shooting to call Investigator Ken Patterson at the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Central Homicide Unit at (760) 393-3500.

Most of us traveled quit far to play in the tournament and it just comes as shock to hear what happened so close to where these girls played. don't listen to caliber who lives on the rez. the Indian's and residents who live on the rez for the most part are nothing but criminals. yes their are shooting outside reservations but explain how the reservations like soboba and morongo have private police dept's not to enforce laws but to protect tribal members from the real police. this tribe like morongo and san manuel hire us too lock down the rez to bankers, trying to collect on due's. they also make us keep out all law enforcement unless called to respond. The Tribal council who are for the most part uneducated and related to felon's order us to protect their criminal family's by hiding them from the sheriff's deputy's. if they find out we give out info on the family member then we loose our job. as far as the tribes donating money. its nothing more then a bribe to shut up and dont bother us deal. look at the sheriffs dept. soboba pays the dept $100,000's plus equipment and when they do their job they cancel the contract and refuse to donate any more money. morongo is also the same. im sick of going to work and this indians who for the most part dont work do nothing but drink, do drugs and spend their money buying guns. this week they complained about only getting $5000 for the month from the casino and they do nothing to earn the money. they fire good workers take their benefits and for what cause they cant get a gob or learn to better spend their money. take it from someone who works for this guy's. this reservation should be shut down along with the casino that only makes this criminals money. if you ask me anyone who plays at saboba casino and morongo are only helping fund domestic terrorism.

I do not agree with all the comments above stating (ALL SOBOBA is criminals) but I do agree with other comments posted by the people who took their little ones to play up their on the res that were astonished to pass crime scenes on their way or from the field. THINK about IT EVERYONE... if you (MOM or DAD) took your kids to play against a team at a certain location and found out all of the RECENT criminal activity there (including MURDER) would most likely feel the same as these parents. Reality SUCKS... BUT the fact of the matter is.... NOT A SAFE PLACE to BE at this time, it's NOT the PARENTS fault for the crimes commited by their own... nor the fault of the tribal communtiy. REALITY is THE EVIL REALM of this world taking over our young and old. JESUS... I have grown up next to the res all my life and have seen the crimes escalating not just on the reservation but all over! Yes, a lot of activity has been reported on the reservation lately, but know these activities are going on right here in SJ and Hemet that go unspoken. A neighbor friend was shot and killed within the last two months right here in SJ (RIP RAY) and I heard that very weekend 3-4 deceased were found that SAME weekend... in HEMET, SJ, and SOBOBA... BUT we only heard about the ONE. Thank GOD they found the murderer, and I pray he repents to GOD for his crime. It is scary to have kids these days not knowing what will happen next and if it is SAFE for them to step outside. AGAIN.... I have to POST the REALITY OF LIFE.... there is ONE and ONLY ONLY whom watches, cares, loves, and prays for us ALL unconditionally..... THAT is who we need to seek in these times of TROUBLE... For all of you saying that i don't know what i'm talking about and how your leaders are smart and the reservation is just as safe as other city's. explain how some of you telling me you Indian's are smart have so many mistakes on your comments. explain how is it as tribal leaders they can just set down and allow their young to run lawless on the reservation. Yes lawless because that's how the reservation's are. since you are sovereign land how is it they allow and condone DUI, felons w/guns, traffic laws do not exist and you give your tribal police little or no powers and when they give info to the sheriff's that gets one of you low life's sex offenders in jail then you fire him. if an employee from the casino don't serve you on a gold platter you fire them. I don't see criminal's run for city council like your tribal council. look at your leader Robert Salgado Sr. i mean what an idot. guy looks more like a wannabe king pin then a leader. never have i heard of a council member or in his case mayor get into it with the sheriff's dept for doing their job. especially when the suspect shoots at law enforcement. another thing is how the tribe refuses to allow law enforcement onto the reservation, along w/child protection services. i mean I've seen tribal members w/children less then 1 year old riding in the front seat w/no child seat. explain how your council allows this. yes no city is perfect and yes their are some good people on the reservation but for the leaders of the community to allow crime to happen and then ask why. at the same time yes i should not blame the reservation but the U.S. government for not doing something about this. if you ask me i would like to see Fed's enter and patrol the reservation because unfortunately the local sheriff's dept has failed to safe guard the genial public from this criminal empire, not because they cant but because they get little or no cooperation from the tribes other then yelling abuse. I'd like to see selgado tell the FBI or DEA to get off the reservation.

Sounds to me like the most bothered person on this page is the one who obviously lost their job from Soboba for not doing their job right. Certainly not serving them with a gold platter played no part. I hope for your sake you learn to do your job better so that you can actually keep one of them. It sounds to me that you are the road to crying of abuse and unfair treatment just as the people you are so rudely complaining about. I also am not a person who likes to be judged by criminals and law breakers but a very large percentage of people like are police officers. Fortunately for them there are laws that conceal most of their lawbreaking from us. But I am sure if you ever work for them and get fired we will hear you talk about them too. I feel that know matter what a person has done they should be treated properly. The constitution speaks loud and clear and no one has a bigger responsibility to this than any and all law enforcement. We have all heard the saying "lead by example" it's time that law enforcement try this because it has to start somewhere and what better place. Good luck finding a new job ex-worker from the reservation. To Robert Salgado it sounds to me like you are trying to defend and protect your people as our police should be doing for us. Keep up the good work and don't be sidetracked by peoples ignorant commments. You have a long road, stick to it. Your people aren't bad and deserve better, we all do.

i cant believe there are actually comments about unsafe sofball fields, etc. don't you people get what the hell happened on july 12? alot of lives were changed and NOT for the better..children lost their father, a mother lost a son, sister lost her brother, father lost a son, brothers lost their brother, friends lost an irreplaceable gift forever... some of you say ," well stay off the reservation if you don't agree with the ways of the indians", and to that i say, " murdering your own IS NOT THE INDIAN WAY!!! murder is permenant and certainly not something i think ANY race of humans should let become exceptable in their community. for if murder becomes a way of life, the quality and the quantities of our lives deminish greatly. i , myself want to cherish human lives, its not up to me to deciede who lives or dies , nor is it my right, the only thing i MUST do is LIVE greatfully and never allow evil to make up my mind for me. only a weak puppet would allow evil to call the shots..

I JUST WANT TO set the record straight for the people who cared about ben lindsey.. i was there when he was killed, and it was the worse thing anyone should ever experience.. devastating to say the least.. yet with all that had happened , all the tramua, now i hear rumors that i can't even begin to wrap around my head as being any where near possible.. there is a sick individual spreading the lie that ben was robbed the night he was killed..... now i dont know about everyone else , but ben was my friend, always was there for me, the very last thing that i would of ever done would be to rob him... how this person WHO WASN'T EVEN PRESENT the night in question, could come up with such a distrubing lie, sickens me because it only proves that the one spreading the lie and the ones believing the lie are people who might just rob their friends even as they lay dead on the floor.. me personally, the only thing on my mind was ben, and trying to compute what had just happened him.... robbing him? NEVER i loved him and the thought never crossed my mind. so i must say to this person who is slandering my name ( you know who you are M.) YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR'E SAYING? i am not going to just sit back and let you pretend like you know what the hell happened that night, so stop gossiping! there's only two people that know exactly what happened and you are not one of them!!!! be careful because justice is coming for everyone , i know my back yard is clean , maybe you should take a look in yours!!!!
