Gang members convicted of murder in fatal shooting of 15-year-old girl

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
Issue 53, Volume 13.

RIVERSIDE - Two gang members were convicted of murder today in the shooting death of a 15-year-old Moreno Valley girl at a 2005 high school graduation party.

Cayson Lamont Caddell, 19, and Travell Darrell Williams, 23, were found guilty on all counts against them, including attempted murder and sentence-enhancing gang allegations.

As the verdicts were read, Caddell could be seen wringing his hands, while Williams stared at the desk in front of him.

They face life in prison without the possibility of parole. A hearing to set a sentencing date is scheduled for Jan. 29.

"The people's belief was always that Mr. Caddell was the shooter,'' Deputy District Attorney Debra Postil said outside the courtroom. "In addition, there was evidence that Mr. Williams told Mr. Caddell to shoot.''

The two were convicted of the attempted murder of a man who lived next door to the house where Brooke Nicole McKinney was shot in the head on June 10, 2006. He was hit by a stray bullet while in his home.

A third suspect, 25-year-old Cochise Thomas, will be tried early next year.

The victim had gone to a party in the 24600 block of Freeport Drive to celebrate some friends' graduation from Valley View High School.

The defendants' target, 22-year-old Paul Anderson, testified that he was at the party when Williams approached and accused him of disparaging their gang.

Anderson said Thomas punched him in the jaw, sending him running off. As he fled, he heard someone yell, "Shoot him!'', he said.

Witnesses testified that two volleys were fired. The teen was hit by the second, according to trial testimony.

RIVERSIDE - Jury deliberations are scheduled to resume today in the case of two men accused in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old Moreno Valley girl at a high school graduation party.

Cayson Lamont Caddell, 19, and Travell Darrell Williams, 23, could face no-parole life prison terms if convicted of first-degree murder and sentence-enhancing allegations of committing a violent felony for the benefit of a street gang.

The two also are charged with attempted murder in the wounding of a man who lived next door to the house where Brooke Nicole McKinney was fatally shot in the head on June 10, 2006. A third suspect, 25-year-old Cochise Thomas, is to be tried separately early next year.

McKinney had gone to the party in the 24600 block of Freeport Drive to visit with friends celebrating their graduation from Valley View High School, according to trial testimony.

The defendants' alleged target, 22-year-old Paul Anderson, testified at trial that he was at the party when Williams approached and accused him of disparaging the defendants' gang.

Anderson said Thomas punched him in the jaw, sending him running off. As he fled, he heard someone yell, "shoot him,'' he said.

Witnesses testified that two volleys were fired. McKinney was hit by the second, according to testimony.

Octavio Macias, 26, was watching a movie in his second-floor bedroom next door when he heard the shots and began running for the staircase. A bullet then struck him at the base of his neck, but he has since recovered.
