Issue 02, Volume 14.

A Lake Elsinore couple hasn’t let their vastly different religious beliefs get in the way of raising a family and building a future.

She’s a Christian. He’s a Satanist. But Jeff and Lee Ann Lieberman say their unconditional love trumps their religious differences.

They met through mutual friends. He lived near her, and they talked and planned to meet at a fall celebration.

"We made plans for him to come over for a Halloween party," Lee Ann, 26, said during a recent interview. "Jeff came over, and we have been together ever since. The third day that we were hanging out he told me that he was Satanic. I said I was Christian, and we moved on to talk about other things."

The couple has been together for eight years. They have been married seven years, and have four children who range in age from 2 months to 5 years. Two dogs, two hamsters and eight fish blend in around the edges.

Proud to be a family man, Jeff said he’s grateful for the religious freedom he has in his household.

"I try to respect my wife enough not to do my satanic things in front of her," he said.

His Satanic "things" include writing death metal music along the lines of Gwar, a famous band in that genre. He makes music under the name Fleshbeast. Jeff has turned an extra room on the side of their house into a soundproof studio and private sanctuary.

There are few opposites that have existed throughout written history that are as prominent as God and Satan.

Satan first appeared in the Hebrew Bible as a fallen angel who challenged the religious faith of humans. Satan is scattered throughout Scripture, appearing before Eve in the form of a snake in the Garden of Eden and before Christ as he fasted in the wilderness.

Like many couples, the Liebermans squabble from time to time. But "when it comes down to it, we are both peaceful, loving people who care a lot about each other, so we don’t let religion get in the way of our feelings for each other," Jeff Lieberman said.

He said that not subjecting his family to any religious influence helps keep them stitched together. He said he will never force his beliefs on his children, and wants them to grow up and decide for themselves if Satanism, Christianity or another religion is right for them. He said he will support their decisions.

An Episcopalian priest who serves as a liaison with other faiths for the San Diego diocese, which serves about 50 congregations as far north as Lake Elsinore, said he had not previously heard of a couple with such diverse religious beliefs.

"It’s very interesting," said the Rev. Canon Wayne F. Sanders, who is the priest in charge of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Fallbrook. He applauded the couple’s decision to not impose their faiths upon each other and to let their children decide for themselves.

"God knows," Sanders said in a separate interview. "We don’t know. God will judge. Man shouldn’t judge."

Jeff Lieberman said many misconceptions surround his beliefs.

He said the common stereotype portrays Satanists as profane, blood-drinking fiends who engage in orgies and perform animal sacrifices.

"The Satanists who mutilate animals and hurt innocent people are a bunch of scumbags looking for something or someone to put blame upon for their own sick actions," he said. "Satanism is about individuality, compassion and respect, common courtesy, and living life the best way that you see fit to live it, without breaking any laws or hurting anyone."

He challenges Christians, Catholics and members of religious denominations to examine Satanism. The Satanic Bible can be found in many local bookstores and is available in the Riverside County library system.

"I’ve never known a religious person who had a negative opinion about Satanism to ever read up on it," Jeff said. "If you study what it’s truly about, then you have a right to preach for or against it."

Jeff said he was introduced to Satanism when he was 12 years old.

"I was still very young, and curious about life like most average teenagers," he said. "I was given a copy of the Satanic Bible by a close friend."

He thumbed through the book casually. At that time, it didn’t spark a strong interest.

"One day when I was 17, I decided to give it a read," he said.

The Satanic Bible was written in 1969 by Advertisement

Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, an organization dedicated to the carnal self that began three years earlier. Sanders said he knew LaVey’s son and helped steer him toward Christianity.

LaVey, who did not worship the Devil or other evil entities, was often asked, "Why use the word ‘Satan’ in describing your religion? Why not call it humanism?" Like Satanism, humanism is a human-centered philosophy that upholds reason, ethics and justice and rejects, supernaturalism, pseudoscience and superstition.

Satanists are described by the Church of Satan as those who "find more strength in images of defiance, fortitude against all odds and self-determination than we do in the image of the guy hanging on the cross."

Peter Gilmore, the Church of Satan’s high priest, elaborated in "The Satanic Scriptures" section of the book "Satanism: The Feared Religion."

Gilmore wrote, "There are no elements of devil worship in the Church of Satan. Such practices are looked upon as being Christian heresies. Believing in the Christian world-view of God vs. the Devil and choosing to side with the Prince of Darkness is pointless to the Satanist as neither exists. Satan is not a conscious entity to be worshipped, but rather it is a name for the reservoir of power inside each human to be tapped at will."

Jeff Lieberman said he is a member of the Church of Satan, but he doesn’t congregate with other Satanists. He does not know many other Satanists in the Lake Elsinore area. He said he has one friend who shares his beliefs, but he does not talk or hang out with him very much as Lieberman is more involved with family activities.

"The Satanic Bible is meant to be a guide to teach you how to be a creative person in your own lifestyle," said Lieberman. "It’s not a book to live by word for word. It’s an example of how to see yourself as the ‘god’ of your own life."

Years ago, he tried out for a vocalist position in the famous metal band Slipknot. He wasn’t familiar with the group at the time. The group is known for wearing dramatic masks during its stage act. At first, Jeff felt they were insincere because they hid their faces behind masks. He didn’t get the vocalist job, but he has since become a fan.

"I got into their music later rather than what they looked like," he said.

On his MySpace page where he promotes Fleshbeast, Jeff has photos of himself wearing a black hooded cloak and silver mask. But he’s not reluctant to remove the mask for the world to see.

In his youth, Jeff claimed to be a professional skateboarder for 10 years. These days, he hopes to continue what he calls his dream job of being a machinist. But due to work-related injuries to his neck and back, he has been unemployed for the past two years.

"I’ve had a doctor tell me the surgery that would help me is life-threatening," Jeff said. "Then, I had a second doctor say that (other) doctor was crazy."

Jeff said he is in the process of figuring out the correct treatment for his health problems. But he doesn’t know which doctor, if any, to trust.

Lee Ann, who is not a member of any particular church, sticks to her Christian beliefs with strong conviction. She also stands firmly by her husband’s side even though some members of her family have expressed concerns over his religious choice.

"My brother is a little iffy about it, but he doesn’t let it bother him because he sees that Jeff does not push me or the kids to believe in what he does," she added. "But, my sister-in-law has gotten to the point where she does not want Jeff to come around her daughters’ birthday parties and things like that."

Lee Ann said it takes true love to make their marriage work.

"I am able to express my beliefs to Jeff just like he is able to do in front of me," Lee Ann said. "The Bible says the Lord will be the only one to do the judging. So, in a sense, every one of those people out there who judges my husband and feels that he is a bad person and is sinning needs to look in the mirror and realize they will be going to the same place that they wish on him."

Assistant editor Ashley Cook contributed to this story.

since the Bible clearly states that we are not to be unequally yoked, I'm guessing this woman is like every other "Christian" who claims to be, yet doesn't follow Christ or his teachings. Just another example of how "Christians" have departed from the Bible and continue to create their own gods...based on what they think, feel and want to do. There is no fellowship of light with darkness....2 shall become one flesh....how can the two coexist? I'll answer my own question: probably quite easily considering this woman probably isn't a Christian after all. "I told him I was a Christian and He told me he was a Satanist" and then you moved on and talked about other things?? Clearly that summarizes where your "Christianity" fits into your life. Sad that the day of judgment will be a rude awakening. I think a lot of "Christians" will hear a very unwelcome phrase "Depart from me: I never knew you." Poor kids are the victims here. They will undoubtedly grow up greatly confused.

what I don't get is that according to this article if I understood it correctly, Satanism has nothing to do with worshipping Satan. So why is it called that? I think the religion should be renamed if that is the case because yes that does freak me out when I think of someone as a Satanist. I think they have a beautiful family and I will pray for them and their children. Yes the Bible does say that we are not to be unequally yoked but the whole reason why we are Christians is because we are sinners, we all fall and we are not perfect. I feel sad for the kids because they most definitely will be judged by others as many parents would be afraid to let their children play with them. I wish this family the very best but I will also add this man to my list of prayers for his eternal salvation.

i agree with Shocked. people like to quote the judge not verse without reading the rest of the verse. I would hope that someone would judge me someday according to the same manner. I prefer to call it accountability. All the people who don't want to be "judged" will ultimately be judged anyway. Living in denial and skirting responsibility for our actions doesn't prevent an eternity spent separated from God. I will also pray for the family...and for my own attitude... because this type of thing gets me a little riled up...

Gwar is not a death metal band, they are a Grammy Award-nominated thrash metal band. If reporters are not accurate with details, why do you take them so seriously? Besides, since neither Satanism nor Christianity admit to teaching prejudice, theoretically the couple will do just fine. I suppose my view could be skewed, since most of the Christians I know are "sinners" and the only Satanic person I know is a normal guy who loves animals.

To Confused: I believe you are wrong on this one. In I Corinthians 7:13-16, Paul makes a very important and very clear statement regarding this issue:

"...and if any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he is willing to go on living with her, she should not divorce her husband. For the unbelieving husband is made holy through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy through the brother. Otherwise your children would be unclean, whereas in fact they are holy.
If the unbeliever separates, however, let him separate. The brother or sister is not bound in such cases; God has called you to peace. For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband; or how do you know husband, whether you will save your wife?"
Regarding this couple, the wife is loving her husband as she should.

Thanks mom of lots... I wasn't saying that the wife was sinning; I should have been more clear. I was only stating that we all sin and those who think that we Christians think we are perfect are very very wrong. Thanks for posting that verse. Yes, with God anything can happen!!

Monica, I'm sure you know spilling milk will not send you to hell; what kind of aunt would say such a thing? Only the absence of God in your heart will cause you to be eternally separated. I hope that didn't shape your view of God and cause you to turn from Him.

Thank You for reading our story, and I enjoy the critcism, good and bad.

because if the wife - who claims to be 'Christian' is basing her 'christianity' on the bible, it would be very difficult for her to be married to a satanonic follower. If the husband's 'satan' is the 'satan' of the bible - like oil and water - I doubt his 'satan' and satonic teachings are truly those that are spoke of and traditionally identified with the 'satan' of 'christian' history.

21. observer says :

well from a non religious standpoint - the fact is, christianity is based upon the figure written about in the bible named 'Christ' and his teachings. According to Christians, this individual performed miracles and taught the masses, those specific individuals or 'authors' that wrote about him, witnessed his words. Scholars have justified the writings through collaboration and there is a mutual agreement as to whom 'Christ' is. I am curious where this 'Satanic' bible came from, what it is based upon and whom the individual 'satan' was (according to the satanic bible mentioned) Is it based upon the christian 'satan'? If so, when was this testament written. My point here is: anyone can write a bible of 'doctrine' and call it 'whatever' including 'Satanic' but the Christian doctrine has been based upon the same individual for centuries. Is this the christian based individual 'satan'?

Whether the paper's article on this subject is accurate or not, I have noted a number of things: 1) It's a lot more about him then his wife 2) His wife does not attend any particular church, yet considers herself to be a Christian and of strong, Christian beliefs?, 3) The couple has decided to let their children decide for themselves what faith that they want, but I'll bet the Satanist part of the family will win out, and, what kind of spiritual upbringing and otherwise will these children have as they are maturing toward adulthood? 4) What kind of pastor or priest would say something like "let their children decide for themselves." Was that something of a misprint?, and, finally, 5) Why in hell would you plaster a photo of such a story on the front page? To improve your readership? Well, people did read that story, but I, for one, would not bother to pick up your paper again---even if it is for free.

the 'satan' of the bible was all about death, destruction, deceit and the undoing of good. Is his 'Satan' the same character? If so, does he worship and commit to death, destruction, deceit and the undoing of good? If not, then I doubt he is truly a 'satanic' worshipper - which would explain why they get along. Either that, or he is the one being decieved by Satan.

28. wil thompson says :

@ observer. Its quite the opposite. The GOD of the bible was all about death, destruction, deceit and undoing of good. Have you actually read the bible? What did Satan actually do wrong in the bible? He simply pointed out the carnal nature of life to Jesus. The only time in the bible Satan does anything horrible is when he kills Jobs' family and livestock .... and then only because GOD told him to do it. Satan is not the serpent in the garden of Eden either because after Eve and Adam commit the first sin, the serpent is cursed and loses his arms and legs, forever forced to slither like a snake. However, later in the bible, Satan is walking around. God (YHWH) was the one who killed babies, children and approved of slavery, discrimination against women and other obscene things. Read your bible please Christians - you'll be shocked by what you see.

You are referencing the old testament. Which was jewish of origin, and it is unclear as to whether it was accurate and historical anyway. The New Testament is the testament of Christ and the basis of Christianity and Christ did not teach death and destruction, in fact, he taught love, peace and consideration for your fellow man even your enemies - it is YOU that needs to actually understand. Christianity was born through the New Testament and the teachings of Christ. He allowed himself to be taken into custody and executed to promote forgiveness. The only death and destruction was through the evil and distorted minds of those that wanted him dead. He healed people and gave people hope. I could go on and on but don't see the point to bother.

33. Thought says :

The religion or philosophy was called Satanism to antagonize Christians of the "Fire and Brimstone"
persuasion. Satanism is an atheistic philosophy. Many atheists have been quite disheartened by the power wielded by a largely ignorant and uneducated Christendom. The satanic religion is named thus, not in defiance of the Christian God (which according to Satanists does not exist anyway), but in defiance of pompous hypocrites calling themselves Christians. Live and let live.

By the way there is no hell. A god that would allow (notice I did not say send) his creations to suffer torment for eternity would have to be defined as evil. There is no mercy in torture. Regardless of the choices someone makes in life, no one deserves eternal damnation. Only an evil entity would sanction such a thing.
