RIVERSIDE - A Riverside man suffered severe injuries today when he jumped into the path of a moving big rig on the Interstate 215, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The 38-year-old pedestrian -- whose identity was being withheld -- was taken by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital, CHP Officer Steve Carapia said.

CHP Sgt. Chuck Davenport reported earlier that the man was listed in critical condition.

[ The Tutoring Center ] the man was struck in the number three lane of northbound I-215, in which the big rig was traveling 20 to 25 mph, Carapia said.

The man was walking in a southerly direction on northbound I-215 when he inexplicably bolted in front of the 2012 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Kevin Robertson, of Lake Jackson, Texas, Carapia said.

The man struck the right side of the rig's hood and right rear view mirror of the truck, Carapia said.

The collision was under investigation.
