Issue 48, Volume 16.

MURRIETA - A 150-pound akita viciously attacked two other dogs, charged a Murrieta police officer, and was shot and killed, police said today.

The large and powerful dog reportedly mauled a much smaller Welsh corgi as its female owner was walking it at 7:53 a.m. Friday in the 24400 block of Skyview Ridge, Murrieta police Lt. Rob Firmes said.

The woman struck the akita an unknown number of times with an umbrella. Passersby jumped in to help the woman save her dog, and the akita ran off, Firmes said.

The corgi later died.

a home at Alicia Way and Alondra Drive. Its owner tried freeing the pug from the akita's jaws as police officers used a Taser on it, Firmes said.

The akita was stunned long enough to drop the injured pug, which retreated with its owner into the home. The akita then ran toward one of the two police officers at the scene, Firmes said.

The akita was shot and killed. Police did not know if the pug survived.

The akita was one of two similar dogs from the same owner that were seen loose in the area, police said. Students at nearby Shivela Middle School students were escorted by officers who were unsure of the other dog's whereabouts.
