Pumas, Golden Bears compete during annual Holiday Classic

Two local teams were among the 72 teams from around the country invited to the prestigious 23rd Annual Holiday Classic presented by UnderArmour in San Diego, Dec. 26-29, 2012.

The Chaparral Pumas (11-6) went 2-2 in the Governor’s Division at Rancho Bernardo High School and the Temecula Valley Golden Bears (10-7) went 2-2 in the American Division at La Jolla Country Day School.

Chaparral opened with a 59-43 win against Rancho Buena Vista. Sean Maganti (15), Dylan Jacobsen (13) and Isaiah Johnson (11) led the scoring; Jacobsen and Johnson each had three 3’s. The Pumas beat Bishop’s from San Diego 53-43 in the next round with Jacobsen scoring 22 points (3-of-6 from 3-pt range) and Cody Coyle contributing 12.

Brea Olinda (11-3), the #20-ranked Division 3 team in the state, handed Chaparral its first loss in the tournament, 61-40. Despite three-point attempts by Jacobsen and Sean Maganti, the Pumas then lost a close one to the Knight Hawks from Palmdale, 57-54 in the third place game. Cold shooting and turnovers in the final period iced the loss for the Pumas, who also missed ten of eighteen free throws.

Temecula Valley won a close opener 49-43 against Mayfair, leading 25-20 at half, but only 35-34 at the end of the third quarter. Brandon Rosser scored 16, including two three’s and pulled down seven boards. D’aubre Doucette also hit two three’s, scoring 10 points; Michael price added 10. The Golden Bears then ran into a tough 13-1 Mesa High (Arizona) team, losing 60-39.

They bounced back with a 67-55 victory over La Jolla Country Day with a dominant 22-10 fourth quarter. Michael Price dropped thirty points (3-of-6 from the 3-pt arc, 7-of-7 from everywhere else and 7-of-8 from the free throw line). Rosser added 14 pts, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. On the final day of the four-day tournament, Temecula Valley lost the battle for fifth place in overtime to the Ocean View Seahawks, 57-54. Price had 17; freshman Riley Schaffer and Rosser contributed 12 each.

Chaparral (11-6) was at Murrieta Mesa (10-7) on Jan. 9 and at Temecula Valley on Jan. 11. Temecula Valley (10-7) was at Vista Murrieta (6-10) on Jan. 9 and hosted Chaparral on Jan. 11.
