RIVERSIDE - A Caltrans worker was critically injured tonight in a hit-and-run crash involving an allegedly drunken driver on the Riverside (91) Freeway in Riverside.

The crash was reported around 9:30 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway at the 14th Street off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The contract employee was setting up a lane closure at the gore point of the exit when he was struck, Terri Casinga of Caltrans told KCAL9.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, the station reported.

A suspect whose car was found with heavy damage was taken into custody a short time after the crash, said Casinga, but it was unclear where.

"To my knowledge they do have someone in custody," Casingasaid. "Again, it is alleged DUI."

The Ninth Street on-ramp and right lane of the freeway was closed as a result of the crash, according to the CHP.
