The Linfield Lions boys’ basketball team went 3-1 in their own tournament, the Linfield Caged Classic, on Dec. 26-29, 2012, losing in the finals to Calvin Christian 54-42. They scored over 70 points in each of their wins.

The Lions (7-6) opened with a win against Excelsior Charter (5-3) from Victorville, 72-57. Darryl Morris led all scorers with 30 points; he also had eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Torin Webb added 20 points.

Yucca Valley fell 71-38 behind a balanced Linfield attack which saw all five Lions starters in double figures: Webb with 10 points, Jack Dickson with 10, Daniel Morris with 16, Darryl Morris with 15 (and nine rebounds) and DJ Matos with 10.

Linfield scored 77 points as Morro Bay (7-7) came up short with 41. Linfield took control from the beginning with a 20-10 first quarter and a 28-12 second quarter.

Calvin Christian (11-1) is the #2-ranked team in the San Diego Section Division 5 and the #15 Division 5 team in the state. They advanced to the finals of the tourney by defeating Heritage (67-53), Rubidoux (66-14), and Rancho Christian (71-54).

Calvin’s sophomore guard Joey LaGrua led all scorers in the championship game with 19 points, including three-of-four from 3-point range. He shot 56 percent in the four games, scoring 61 points. He was named Tournament MVP.

Teammates Mark Bakker and Jeremiah Stout were named to the All-Tourney Team.

"They are a phenomenal extra pass team and have been together for three years," said Linfield head Coach Shawn Stroud.

Darrel Morris scored 16 points for the Lions and his younger brother Daniel scored nine. Both were also named to the All-Tourney Team.

"We have the pieces to fight for a championship," said Stroud. "Playing a team like Calvin prepares us for what we’ll experience with Loma Linda. The Ambassador League is a tough league."

Rancho Christian Eagles won the consolation game against Morro Bay, 91-65, running away with the game with a 35-11 fourth quarter. Sophomore Ja’mel McMahon scored 24 points, including two-of-two from beyond the arc.

Elsinore-transfer junior Terrell Fuller had 17 points and 17 rebounds. Freshmen Jamal "JB" Brower (23 points, including three 3’s and five steals) and Trace Redfield (17 points, nine rebounds) also contributed.

"This team is growing," said Eagles Head Coach Ray Barefield. "We couldn’t have done that last month. The tough schedule we’ve played allows us to see what character we have and how to overcome adversity."

The Eagles are 8-10 (freelance) and ranked #9 in CIF-SS Division 5A polls.
