Translate this page Burglars in Murrieta switching off lights to verify if home is occupiedMonday, January 21st, 2013 Issue 04, Volume 17.
According to Sgt. Don Weller, there have been several recent break-ins during which circuit breakers were tripped by suspects targeting homes they wanted to confirm were empty. "Once the home is determined to be unoccupied, the suspects force entry into the residence and ransack it, looking for valuable jewelry and unsecured firearms," Weller said. He warned residents to be alert to the practice and to keep all valuables, particularly guns, "well secured," Anyone who may have information about the burglaries was urged to call the police department at (951) 696-3615. 9 comments
ill be waiting so i can kill these lazy m.....s.
This happened to us-we thought it was just kids playing a prank but it really scared my wife. We started locking our circuit breaker as it was too easy to access.
Not only happening in Murrieta, it's also in Wolf Creek and Red Hawk in Temecula.
Does anyone know if its against the law to put a lock on your curcuit breaker box if its outside? There is a little handle on ours that is clearly for a lock, but my husband thinks we aren't allowed.
This happened to me a few years ago. I called Edison and they told me to put a lock on the box. It's legal.
@Julie, I would think if its the breaker box that's part of your house, you own it and you can put any stinking lock on it you wish to. Or as many as you wish, even put a hasp on it for extra security. JMO.. ![]()
@Julie, forgot to include that what he might be thinking of is the lock wire on the meter, that prevents or indicates whether or not the meter has been tampered with. You cant remove that, or shouldn't anyway.
I would lock my circuit breaker wether it was "allowed" or not. You own your home, lock it. If anyone has a problem with that or the electric company needs to access it, I am sure they will let you know.
I think you're right about the wire on the meter because I called the fire dept just to be safe and they said yes you can definitely keep a lock on there. The man told me if the fire dept or police need to get to it for some reason they will break it. So I promptly went to Lowes and bought one. As fate would have it, when the guy at Lowes was helping me pick out a lock that would fit, there was a gentleman there who had just had his curcuit breaker box busted the night before and all the power tripped off. He told me he lives in Harveston. So it must be happening all over I.E. Don't these people have anything better to do with their lives! |
