LAKE ELSINORE - A Murrieta man was the sole motorist sheriff's deputies suspected of drunken driving during a sobriety checkpoint in Lake Elsinore that ended today, a sergeant said.

Roger Smith Norton, 52, was booked early today for suspicion of drunken driving when he allegedly failed a field sobriety test. The overnight checkpoint was on Corydon Street, east of Palomar Road, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Peter Giannakakos said.

Norton remained behind bars today in lieu of $2,500 bail, jail records show.

Giannakokos said 999 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, deputies screened 23 of them, and conducted one other field sobriety test. Four vehicles were impounded and 66 motorists were cited for being unlicensed or driving with a suspended license, Giannakakos said.
