The Heritage Patriots (3-3) girls basketball team traveled to Lake Elsinore and battled the Temescal Canyon Lady Titans (0-6) to a 62-48 win.

The outcome was decided in the fourth quarter; Heritage was behind 38-32 after three periods, but outscored the Titans 30-10 behind a tough full-court press.

"Defense gets us back in the game," Patriot Head Coach Nicole Riscica told her team. "Don’t let Janae (Peterson) touch the ball!"

The trapping defense forced numerous turnovers by the guards and capitalized with transition scoring, keeping the ball from the Sunbelt League’s leading scorer.

Peterson, who averages a double-double through 24 games, finished with 33 points, 18 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.

"She’s a tough match-up and almost unstoppable," said Riscica.

"We made a lot of good decisions the first half," said Titans Coach Mike Peterson, "but we made a lot of decision mistakes in the fourth quarter."

Temescal Canyon were called for 18 fouls in the second half and two of their starters – Ada Anigbogu and Danielle Corente – fouled out.

Temescal lost to Elsinore 51-36 the following Thursday; Peterson had 27 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks. The Titans finish league with a home game against Perris on Feb. 7.

Heritage lost a close one 40-36 as Paloma Valley hung on from a 10-point halftime lead. The Wildcats’ Jasmine Peters ended with 18 points, four rebounds, three blocks and one steal.

Heritage travels hosts Elsinore on Thursday, Feb. 7.
