Over the span of my horticultural career, my eye has always been on the lookout for the unique, rare, and bizarre in plants with novel form, shape, color, fruits, and drought tolerance. So what does that say about my garden? Yes it’s a botanical collection to say the least.

An unusual fruit-bearing tree this time of the year is citrus medica var sarcodactylis with a common name of Buddha’s Hand. The fruit’s shape is a collection of wild finger-like appendages that’s like a hand or a yellow bursting star from another horticultural galaxy.

It’s in the citrus family and should be grown and tended like other citrus with full sunlight, good soil drainage and air movement around it, but bear in mind this citrus is cold sensitive, so don’t plant it in low, frosty cold inland valleys.

It flowers in spring along with other types of citrus, and in late winter to early spring, these ornamental fruits appear to dress the tree with a very novel appearance. The fruit does not contain much pulp or juice but the fingers can be peeled, diced into segments and candied as a treat. It is actually the culinary awards that are great when you require a little lemon zest for your own homemade dishes

add some citron for a little added punch; just before I place the pie into the oven, I garnish the whipped chiffon with citron flakes.

The fruit is very aromatic and when brought into the home it adds a wonderful lemony jasmine-like perfume that weaves through the air from room to room.

In the Hebrew faith, the "Etrog" citrons are brought into the home and used at various holidays and ceremonies when in season.

I once planted some red Italian terra cotta containers with fruiting citrons for a client and they were used to line the aisle for a garden wedding up in the Los Angeles area many years ago and were quite striking. Afterwards the trees were planted out in the garden for the family to have on hand for fresh citrons right off their own tree.

In China, the Buddha’s citron symbolizes happiness and long life. Whereas in Japan it is a popular gift for the New Year, for it is believed to bestow good fortune on a household.

The fruits are hard to find in the produce section of your market, but you’ll have better luck at some of the local farmers markets, or grow your own. Beautiful trees are available at Maddock Nursery in Fallbrook and are in fruit now.

It is 430 pm here in New Zealand. At 3pm the network E! had the one hour show casnig The Family that Vanished' I do feel for your family Mike and I do agree with a lot of the comments above. The painter could have been the last person called from the cellphone near the bridge. I highly recommend that all evidence be looked through again and Im sure there can be some enhancement to the video recording at the border! What stood out to me is that your brother became very ill and his wife, who has many aliases, was in search for some medication to help with anger and also the fact she told your mother she was not a part of their family of four! I truly believe in my heart, Summer' is the culprit to all this and Joey has done this for her. Did Joey know Summer had these aliases? does the friend who got them together know this about Summer? Where is the painter now? I can not express enough how strong I believe Summer is behind all this.Is it possible they used different names and applied for Passports and flew from Costa Rica or Mexico to somewhere beyond the US/Mexico Coastlines? She is a mastermind and a controlling woman, I truly feel she has an evil presence within her and she is taking over the situation.I think also, they might of had young Jo's birthmark removed as it is very distinct to have such a birthmark on the forehead. It might help contacting some national, local and international surgeons who have done a birthmark removal procedure.Another thing that captured my attention were the dogs, It is very sad to know they were left unfed and unattended to.I truly adore animals and hope they have been taken well good care of. The friend, in the documentary near the end, who lives in Costa Rica-I think he has some thing to do with it.For some reason, his facial expression released an instinct to me sensing me he is not at all being truthful. He could be someone to investigate. Is it possible to get PHONE RECORDS of both Cell Phones, Joey and Summer. It can be doneI have a lot of ideas going through my mind right now and since watching the full screening of this family of four who went missing in 2010. Please do keep in touch with me as it will be very much appreciated. I know Im millions of miles away but I would like to help as much as I possibly can.All possibilities should be taken into action!I truly hope some day the young boys are found and your brother too.Love to all, god bless
