Five MVHS athletes sign letters of intent

Five student-athletes at Murrieta Valley High School signed their National Letters of Intent to play their sport in college in exchange for a scholarship on Wednesday’s Signing Day.

All-League outside hitter

Annika Backlund signed to play volleyball at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. The all-around student was also a pole vaulter on the track team, carries a 3.9 GPA, and was Commissioner of Athletics for ASB. She has been on a mission trip to Uganda and was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was named Student of the Month in December 2012 for the MVUSD. She plans to major in nursing.

All-League soccer player

Lauren Palmer is headed to the University of Louisiana Monroe.

Teammate forward Cassandra Elmore will play at Jacksonville University in Florida. The Dolphins won a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship last year.

All-League Infielder Tyler Wade will play baseball nearby at San Diego State. He batted .314 last year with a fielding percentage of .917. He was also named Honorable Mention, All-Inland Team.

The Southwestern League’s Defensive MVP, safety Terin Solomon, made his verbal commitment to Oregon State official as he signed his NLI on Wednesday,

Feb. 5. He was also being recruited by Nevada, UCLA, Fresno State and Utah State; but he was the Beavers’ first pledge from the Class of 2013. Solomon recorded 178 tackles, four interceptions, six forced fumbles, four blocked field goals and four blocked punts on the defensive side of the ball. Solomon also saw some time as a receiver and caught four passes for touchdowns. He was named to the Riverside County All-Star Team.
