Volleyball The "Fab Five" have led the Broncos to four consecutive Southwestern League titles, including back-to-back undefeated league seasons, a national ranking and a first-time showing in CIF-SS semifinals. All-League libero Christin Fisher, who led the Bronco defense, will attend Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. Outside hitter Jessian Mitchell selected Cal State Stanislaus. All-League setter Morgan Nunley will play for Concordia University. Coach Kristin Cooke described Terra Varney as "the glue that holds us together with both her offensive and defensive abilities" and will play for the Vandals at the University of Idaho. Four-year varsity starter, League MVP, All-CIF, Californian Player of the Year Alyse Whitaker will be taking her talents to Duke University.
Football Tustin-transfer defensive back Treshon Broughton had four offers (Oregon State, Nebraska, Fresno State, and New Mexico State) as well as interest from Utah. Following a Jan. 18 official visit to Fresno State, the All-Leaguer signed Wednesday to be a Bulldog, explaining he wanted to be "closer to my family and my mom so she can come see my games." Pre-signing day pundits had him going to Oregon State. All-League QB Nick Stevens signed to play at Colorado State University. All-League, Riverside County All-Star offensive guard Donnell Toliver only started for one year with the Broncos, but will play at the next level with UC Davis. Su’a Cravens showed up in support of the program and his fellow signees. The nation’s top-rated safety, Gatorade California Player of the Year, USA Today Defensive Player of the Year and Army All-American graduated early and is already enrolled at USC.
Cross-Country and Track Porter Reddish, one of California’s top runners, will join his sister Erika at BYU following his LDS mission. Teammate Omar Solis, two-time state qualifier, will run for the University of San Francisco. Bethany Balady, who finished 133rd in the 2012 State meet, will join the cross country team at Western Oregon State while teammate Amanda Crissinger, who finished 118th, will run for Cal State Fullerton.
Baseball Right-handed pitcher, Tyler Russell (11-4, ERA 2.02, 75 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched) will be playing for Eastern Michigan University on a baseball scholarship. He had 9-1 record with a 1.01 ERA in 2011. Pitcher/outfielder Joven Afenir, a SoCal All-Star, with a 2.43 ERA and a .411 batting average, will be playing for the University of Kansas. Both signed Nov. 27, 2012, during the early signing period.
Softball All-League Phalen Cochran can play 3B, 1B, left field and catcher. In 2012, she had a .308 batting average, .904 fielding percentage and a .918 slugging percentage. She hit .551 in 2011. She signed with UC Davis and plans to major in aeronautical engineering. Kylie Datil, three-year All-League outfielder, will play for the University of Maryland. She hit .385 last year, .342 as a soph, and .457 as a freshman. Her club team, Corona Angels won state and national titles in 2008, runner-up in 2009. Maryland Head Coach Lauren Watten says, "Her potential impact on our program is unlimited."
Golf Carolane Gariepy, the lone senior on her team, led the girls golf team to a shared league title with Great Oak, to the CIF-SS Team Qualifier and onto a first-time win at the State Regional Tournament. The two-time Individual League Champion and Girls Golfer of the Year, Southwestern League MVP in 2011, signed to play at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She plans on pursuing an engineering degree there.
Diving Former gymnast Madison Hudkins, now an accomplished diver, has signed with Texas A & M. After 10 years of gymnastics, numerous injuries and a wrist surgery forced her to explore other options. In her first year diving, as a freshman, she placed fifth in the CIF-SS Division II finals; her sophomore year, she took second. She is a three-time All-American with her club team. She carries a 4.4 GPA and plans to major in pre-med with plans of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
Soccer Goalkeeper Cheyanne Mumphrey has 19 career shutouts for the Broncos and selected Northern Arizona University over Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and Elmira College in New York. She plans on studying business and becoming an investment banker.
Cheer Raven "Rae" Rivera has been a diver for Vista Murrieta (19th in CIF-SS Div 2 Finals last year) but she has been cheerleading for 11 years and will be continuing that at Cal Baptist University. She competes as part of Pacific Coast Magic’s Small Co-Ed Team "Mysterious." "Each and every one of the young people we honored today are better young citizens than they are athletes (and they are very good athletes!)," said Vista Murrieta Athletic Director Ray Moore. "We are blessed to have the opportunity to work with them here at Vista Murrieta." 0 comments Be the first to share your opinion on this article! |
