MURRIETA - A March 11 preliminary hearing is scheduled for an 18- year-old accused in what investigators say they believe was a gang-related drive-by attack on an East Hemet teenager who was shot several times but survived.

John Henry Barber of Banning could face more than 25 years in prison if convicted of two counts of attempted murder and one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, as well as sentence-enhancing allegations of being a repeat offender and using a firearm during a felony.

According to sheriff's investigators, Barber and three juveniles, whose names were not released, allegedly opened fire on the victim in a predawn assault in the 40000 block of Poppy Lane.

The youth, whose name was not disclosed, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital, underwent surgery and has since begun recuperating.

The three alleged juvenile assailants were booked into Southwest Juvenile Hall.
