Coaching changes are like a revolving door in professional and college sports; local schools are not exempt. Head Football Coach Steve Silberman was just released from all duties at Linfield Christian School. He was also a Bible and PE teacher and Dean of Boys there. There was no incident as a cause.

Athletic Director Timm MacDonnell stated, "We are moving in a different direction. The school’s goals and objectives to set a standard of excellence are still intact, but we just made a change in course."

This is the second change in the football program in the past few years. Former Head Coach Jimmy Kemmis resigned during spring break following the 2009 season in which he led the Lions to a 14-0 season and the school’s only CIF-SS Championship.

Silberman, who replaced Kemmis, had 25 years of coaching experience: 19 years as a high school head coach; six as a college offensive coordinator. He coached the Vista High Panthers to five league titles and three consecutive CIF championships, making San Diego history. He developed 17 Division 1 players, three Pac-10 quarterbacks, and three NFL players. He also assisted at Riverside Community College; the Tigers went from 1-9 to 10-1 and a top ten finish in the state.

Hired late, Silberman installed a new offense and defense, requiring many returning players to adjust to new positions. He was in the second year of his four-year plan to bring the Linfield program to prominence.

In his first year, the team went 6-5 overall, 4-1 in league, taking second place; they lost to Big Bear (9-1) in the first round of playoffs. In his second year, the Lions went 5-7, took 3rd in the Ambassador League and advanced to the second round of playoffs.

During that time participation in JV/varsity football grew from 36 to almost 60 players.

"The kids are great and it was an honor coaching them," said Silberman, "I wish them nothing but the best."

"We are grateful for what Steve has done for the program," said MacDonnell, "He has helped to change the culture here."

"We recognize and appreciate his contributions," said Linfield Principal Holly Wilson. "I have the utmost respect for him. He’s a good man."

Linfield hopes to announce a replacement soon.
