MURRIETA - A probationer accused of assaulting a physically disabled family member in front of sheriff's deputies and briefly barricading himself inside the woman's San Jacinto home to avoid arrest was charged today with two counts of assault resulting in great bodily injury and other felonies.

Frank Leonard Campos, 52, was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly abusing a handicapped relative, whose identity was not released, at her house in the 900 block of Santa Fe Avenue.

Along with the assault counts, Campos is facing kidnapping and elder abuse charges, as well as sentence-enhancing allegations of inflicting injuries on a person over 70 years old and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The kidnapping charge could result in a life prison sentence if Campos is convicted.

The defendant -- who is being held in lieu of $1.1 million bail at Riverside's Robert Presley Jail -- is slated to make his initial court appearance this afternoon at the Advertisement

According to sheriff's officials, deputies were summoned about 2 a.m. Wednesday to a house on Santa Fe Avenue to investigate reports of a woman in distress.

A deputy arrived moments later and saw an elderly woman on her front porch and witnessed a man grab her and drag her back inside the residence, according to the sheriff's department.

The suspect, Campos, "barricaded himself (inside the house) for several minutes," sheriff's Sgt. Michael Canizales said.

"Campos eventually surrendered to deputies without incident," Canizales said. "The victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment."

No explanation was given as to the reasons for the alleged attack.

According to court records, Campos has prior felony convictions for theft and identity theft. In July 2010, he was convicted of brandishing a firearm, a misdemeanor, and sentenced to three years probation, which he was still serving at the time of his most recent arrest.

Yeah, it takes a real tough guy to pick on vulnerable seniors. These kinds of wimps never pick on someone who can defend themselves and fight back.
