Driver possibly blinded by setting sun injures two Temecula pedestrians

Issue 11, Volume 17.

TEMECULA - A driver possibly blinded by the setting sun may have caused a crash that injured two women who were walking in a bike lane in Temecula, a sheriff's sergeant said.

One of the victims suffered major injuries in the crash, which was reported at 5:43 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Pauba and Elinda roads, said Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Jon Wade.

The women were walking west on Pauba Road when they were struck by a Toyota Matrix headed in the same direction, Wade said.

The driver was blinded by the setting sun, then entered a shaded area at the bottom of a hill before allowing the car to drift into the bicycle lane and strike the two victims, the sergeant said.

The most seriously injured woman was thrown a "substantial distance" and the second sustained moderate injuries when she was struck by the car's mirror, Wade said.

Both were taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.

I didn't recall the sun setting at 5:43 yesterday. I got off of work at 6 and it was as light as anything. I remember because we were all remarking how bright out it was. With the new time change it didn't even start getting dark until around 7, so this makes no sense to me. Maybe the time was reported wrong?

The fact that that section of neighborhood looks bucolic (the dip of Pauba and Ynez intersection) and seems very safe, is what makes it so dangerous. We know that the PD knows this, as they constantly are checking the speed of cars with radar at that dip. Combine the amount of cars going to work school or coming from work or school and with pedestrians walking from school or the library or the neighborhood and add the sun setting at the exact angle of the street and you have ingredients for the terrible accident that happened.

I saw the poor girls and pray that they are okay(as well as the driver and passengers in the car). Even though the police are trying their best to have drivers aware of their speed by putting up a speedometer system. Maybe some kind of additional signage of pedestrians (awareness) walking or reduction of speed for that area would help.

I was in shock to see how much damage can be done to a young person by a 2500 lb vehicle.

This accident could have been avoided if these people would have used the sidewalk instead of the bike lane. These accidents will continue to happen until people realize these are bike lanes and not their personal jogging/walking lane. There is usually a perfectly good sidewalk on either side of the street to use.

I see people walking, jogging, even pushing baby strollers side by side in bike lanes, EVEN when there are beautiful, landscaped sidewalks to use. Why do people insist on walking in traffic lanes? It's just broccoli brained behavior. Stupid. I don't feel too sorry for people that get hurt doing stupid stuff, practically asking for whatever they get. They should also have considered that drivers would have thier vision impaired by the bright sun in thier eyes. A little thinking ahead and making a safer choice of where to walk probably would have prevented this. Plus, you never walk in a lane with your back to the traffic!!! Where were these people's brains? DUH!!!!

They were on the street because there is not a sidewalk on that side of the street where the accident occurred.
