TVHS ‘golden’ wrestling season ends strongFriday, March 15th, 2013 Issue 11, Volume 17.
The Golden Bears won their 25th consecutive league championship defeating Murietta Valley on Jan. 31 in a devastating blowout. This was just the first feat TVHS wrestling accomplished this season; earning 25 league titles in a row is a record, not only for Riverside County, but for San Bernardino County as well, and in any sport. Six TVHS wrestlers won their weight class in the Southwestern League Finals on Feb. 2. Just nine days later, co-head coaches Lyndon Cambell and Arnold Alpert led Temecula Valley’s 12 qualifiers to their 15th Dual Title with a CIF-SS Division one victory over Los Alamitos High School. Then, on Feb. 16, TVHS claimed another CIF-Section team title – TVHS’ 31st individual or dual meet title. Temecula Valley High School opened in 1985 (28 years ago), and to win 31 titles in 28 years is a sign of superb determination, dedicated coaches and athletes, and an amazing wrestling program at TVHS. Four Golden Bear wrestlers – Christian Root (106 lbs), Frankie Sandoval (120 lbs), Josh "Joshy" Cortez (126 lbs), and Kyler Phillips (138 lbs) – qualified for Masters for individual victories. At the Masters Tournament, hosted by Temecula Valley on the Feb. 22 and 23, three of the four boys placed high enough to go on to State. Root placed 4th, Cortez placed 6th, and Phillips placed 9th. Little success came at the State meet, but the Bears left with an unforgettable experience and high hopes for next year. 0 comments Be the first to share your opinion on this article! |
