Issue 11, Volume 17.

TEMECULA - A purse left unattended in a shopping cart was stolen but sheriff's deputies later arrested a Temecula man for allegedly making credit card purchases, a sergeant said today.

Sheriff's deputies went Friday to an unnamed business in the 29000 block of Rancho California Road in Temecula and learned that the victim's credit cards that were inside the purse had been used at other businesses in the area.

Deputies traced the purchases to Aaron Joseph Covany, 30, and found evidence in his apartment that allegedly linked him to the theft of the purse and use of the victim's credit cards, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dean Spivacke said.

Covany was arrested Friday and booked on suspicion of second degree burglary and a host of other alleged crimes. He was released today after posting $5,000 bail, according to online jail records.

$5,000.00 bail........hmmmmm. He gets his freedom to do that again pretty easily there while the victim is still damaged. I have an idea. I propose that in adddition to any bail required, that the suspect also have to repay (in cold hard cash) everything he charged on her cards, plus a 100% punitive damages equalling the amount spent/stolen/charged to the victim for emotional distress and identity theft. Only after paying off the victim along with the court (a selfish greedy government entity revenue stream) should he be eligible to get his personal freedom back. Why is it all about the government getting some cold hard cash? Why can't the victim be made whole in order for the suspect to get set free? If the victim can't get anything from him, why should the government?
