MENIFEE -- A 68-year-old man fatally shot his girlfriend and then himself during a domestic altercation in Menifee, authorities said today.

Debra Vandyke, 49, of Menifee died in the attack, which was reported around 10 p.m. Sunday at a house in the 33000 block of Merritt Road, near Scott Road, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The man's identity was not immediately released.

Deputies were called to the location to investigate a domestic squabble, and while en route received word that shots had been fired. When they reached the house, deputies found the man and woman dead in the front yard.

"The investigation revealed the male suspect shot and killed the woman and then shot and killed himself," according to a sheriff's statement.

A possible motive for the attack was not disclosed.
