MURRIETA - A probationer who allegedly beat and stabbed a man, leaving him for dead on a Hemet street, was charged today with attempted murder and other felonies.

Anthony Leonides Arriola, 19, was arrested Sunday night along with a 15-year-old boy after allegedly using a baseball bat and knife to attack and injure a man in the 600 block of North Alessandro Street.

Arriola could face more than 20 years behind bars if convicted of the attempted murder count, as well as assault resulting in great bodily injury and sentence-enhancing weapons allegations.

The defendant, who is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, is slated to make his initial court appearance this afternoon. The status of the juvenile suspect, whose identity has not been released, could not immediately be confirmed.

to Hemet police Sgt. Bob Nishida, around 7 p.m. Sunday, Arriola and the teenager allegedly attacked a man during a confrontation outside a home on Alessandro.

The reasons behind the attack were unclear.

Officers were summoned to the location by witnesses and found the victim, whose identity was withheld, laying on the ground with life-threatening injuries, Nishida said.

The man was airlifted to a hospital and is continuing to undergo treatment.

Hemet police detectives were able to quickly identify the suspects, and their investigation led them 30 minutes later to a house in the 600 block of Sonrisa Street, about a block away.

Nishida said Arriola and the juvenile were discovered hiding in the residence. Both were arrested without incident.

According to court records, Arriola was convicted last June of felony drug possession and sentenced to three years probation.
