MURRIETA - Senior standouts, Tyler Russell and Joven Afenir, from the Vista Murrieta Broncos Baseball team were at it again yesterday, doing what they love to do; play great baseball. Russell pitched a four-hitter and Afenir went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

Vista Murrieta topped Great Oak by a score of 5-1 in what some are saying could be a preview of things to come as hopefuls look down the road towards a Southwestern League showdown for the league title. The Broncos who are 6-3 overall and 1-1 in league have won three straight and five of the last seven match-ups between the teams.

"We are expecting to battle for the league championship, we have players that work hard and have been coached well since the program opened and we are just trying to continue to build momentum," Vista Murrieta coach Matt Mosiello said.

Russell, who is 4-0 on the season, is now 24-5 in his career. VMHS junior, Ryan Lillie, went 3 for 3 with an RBI double and a run scored and freshman, Jack Moberg, reached base in all three of his plate appearances. Great Oak’s starter, Brad Wegman, gave up seven hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

"We were outplayed today in every facet, from the hits we didn't get, to the pitches they did get, we just need to look ahead, bounce back and shake this one off," Wolfpack coach Eric Morton said. Great Oak is now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in league.
