Auto transport flatbed trailer becomes unattached, causes crash and power failure in Menifee

MENIFEE - (SHERIFF PRESS RELEASE) On May 07, 2013, at 2:08 p.m., Officers from the Menifee Police Department responded to a collision at Newport Road and Murrieta Road, Menifee. The call was received as having unknown injuries, and an explosion at the same area immediately following the collision.

The collision consisted of John Gibelyou (69 years from Wildomar) driving a van eastbound on Newport Road. He was towing an auto transport flatbed trailer. The trailer hitch became disengaged as the vehicle combination crossed through a small dip at the intersection. The safety chains on the trailer also failed and the trailer veered off on its own. a guide wire leading to a power pole. It appeared some electrical device on the pole was the cause of the explosion. That led to a power outage in the area. It is unknown how many customers were affected by the outage at the time of this writing. There were no injuries in the collision and neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected in this case. Utility companies were notified to respond to the location to restore power to the customers.

The investigation is continuing and anyone that may have witnessed the collision or may have further information is asked to call the Menifee Police Department Traffic Division at (951)210-1000.
