MURRIETA - A 63-year-old Temecula man accused of fatally shooting his brother-in-law during a dispute was charged with murder today.

Nelson Virgil Allen was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly gunning down 42-year-old Donald Piper outside his home at 12705 Pechanga Road.

Along with the murder count, Allen is charged with sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.

The defendant, who is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Southwest Detention Center, is slated to make his initial court appearance this afternoon at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.

According to Riverside County sheriff's officials, deputies were called to the 12000 block of Pechanga Road around 11 a.m. Saturday to investigate reports of a shooting.

Sgt. Tyson Voss said that the attack happened on a large parcel ringed by several homes with a common driveway. The property is virtually encircled by the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians' reservation but is not part of tribal land, Voss said.

According to the sergeant, Allen and Piper had been engaged in an "ongoing family dispute" that apparently Advertisement

boiled over, resulting in the victim being shot once.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Allen was arrested without incident. Court records indicate he has had several traffic-related convictions, but nothing serious.

TEMECULA - An ongoing family dispute turned deadly when a Temecula man fatally shot his brother-in-law near the Pechanga Reservation and was later arrested for suspicion of murder, a sheriff's sergeant said today.

Nelson Virgil Allen, 63, was arrested Saturday in connection with the shooting death of Donald Piper, 42, who was found by sheriff's deputies with at least one gunshot wound in the 12000 block of Pechanga Road, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Tyson Voss said.

Deputies rolled up to the property in response to an 11:02 a.m. call about shots fired. Both Allen and Piper lived in a parcel of land where several homes are surrounded by the reservation but are not associated with it, Voss said. Allen remained in custody today in lieu of $1 million bail, jail records showed.
