Just one week after their record-breaking CIF Southern Section Finals performance, the Great Oak Girls Cross Country Team won the California Interscholastic Federation State Championship with a low score of 76. They beat second place Davis Sr. High (149) by 73 points. Southwestern League rival Vista Murrieta was tenth in the state with 249 points.

"We were very happy with the girlsí performance at State," said Coach Doug Soles, "They were very relaxed and confident going in as only defending champions can be." This was Great Oak Girlsí third State title in four years. They are now the winningest Division 1 program in the state with three titles. The Wolfpack girls also have the two fastest Division 1 times ever run on the course.

The race at Woodward Park in Fresno, California featured seven of the top forty teams in the nation. The Wolfpack finished first at 1:29:28, averaging 17:54 and with a spread of 1:24. Their top five finished in the first thirty-five and the entire team finished in the top forty-five.

"I was personally amazed at how fast our top three ran, especially Destiny," said Soles, "You canít coach that! Kids either have that kind of heart or they donít." Sophomore Destiny Collins finished third overall individually at 17:09; seniors Haley Dorris (7th, 17:34) and Ashley Helbig (10th, 17:51); sophomore Desiree Stinger (24th, 18:21), and junior Maiya Larsen (32nd, 18:33) rounded out the scoring. Senior Chrissy Calain finished 39th at 18:39 and freshman Kiyena Beatty crossed 41st at 18:40. "Iím so proud of all the girls; it was truly a team effort!"

"If you want something, you have to be willing to get up every single morning, like you donít have another morning to work, and to be doing everything in your absolute ability to become successful," said Team Captain Chrissy Calain. "I run because running has shown me "when you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful." " Calain spent the first half of the season sidelined with an injury.

The Great Oak girls had previously obliterated the Mt SAC Invitational record at CIF-SS Finals by twenty seconds, setting a new time of 87:58 and an average of 17:36. had ranked Great Oak #8 in the nationís Top 40 on November 14; the Wolfpackís CIF-SS Finals performance propelled them past perennial distance powerhouse Fayetteville-Manlius of New York to the nationís top spot. Great Oak Girls Cross Country team is now ranked #1 in the nation!

The young Vista Murrieta team had five runners finish in the top ninety: junior Ashley Cahalan (19th, 18:13); sophomore Michaela Reynolds (58th, 18:44); and freshmen Josie Guinn (25th, 18:16), Melissa Bovee (74th, 19:14), and Alexandria Wiseman (88th, 19:33). Sophomore Elise Benner finished 97th at 19:42 and freshman Julie Diaz finished 128th at 20:24. The team finished at 1:34:00, averaging 18:48 with a spread of 1:20.

In Division 1 Boys, Arcadia continued its dominance with 59 points. The Great Oak Boys team finished 12th in the state with 249 points. Nicholas Doan finished 29th (15:53); two spots later was Robbie Gleeson (31st, 15:55); Patryk Giba was 67th at 16:19; Cole Spencer (84th, 16:25) and Anthony Arvizu (87th, 16:26) completed the scoring. Sophomore Isaac Cortes was 94th at 16:33 and Senior Jeremy Stumpp finished 103rd at 16:37.

Individual qualifier junior Taylor Taite from Murrieta Mesa High School finished 9th in Division 2 with a time of 17:44.

In Division 5 Boys, junior Devyn Gollery from Hamilton High finished 49th (17:14) and senior Andrew Russell from Linfield Christian finished 59th at 17:24.

Sophomore Brianna Wilson also represented Linfield Christian finishing 14th in Division 5 Girls with a time of 19:30.

"It will be tough to lose amazing girls like Haley Dorris, Ashley Helbig, and Chrissy Calain to graduation this year," said Soles, "but they graduate with three [state championship] rings for Ashley and two apiece for Haley and Chrissy so they will go on to college with smiles on their faces."

Congratulations to all our local state competitors and kudos to Great Oak Girls: repeat State Champions and the top team in the nation!
