RIVERSIDE - Gov. Jerry Brown today ordered a special election to fill an Inland Empire senate seat vacated last month by a veteran lawmaker.

Brown set a March 25 primary and a June 3 general election for the 23rd Senate District seat.

Sen. Bill Emmerson announced his resignation last month, saying his "passion" for the job had waned and "constituents deserve a senator with the level of commitment that I once had."

"My health is perfect, and I leave with the satisfaction that I worked hard and did my very best," Emmerson said.

election at that time was held to fill a seat vacated by then-Sen. John Benoit, who resigned after being appointed to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors.

Emmerson originally represented the 37th Senate District. However, after district boundaries were redrawn in 2011 based on the decennial census, Emmerson became senator for the 23rd district, which runs from Hemet north to Big Bear, east to Cabazon and west to Rancho Cucamonga.

Emmerson was re-elected by a 30-percent margin last November. Though his resignation became effective Sunday, the senator's staff remain in place to answer constituents' questions.

Assemblyman Mike Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, already had declared himself in the running for the vacated seat.
