Broncos’ quarterback Coltin Gerhart led Vista Murrieta past Norco and into the CIF Southern Section Inland Division Championship game Friday night with an impressive 56-19 victory over the Cougars.

Gerhart waited until the semifinals to have his best passing game of the season. He threw for 244 yards and connected with Darryl Denby for three touchdowns. Denby ended the game with six receptions for 165 yards. Gerhart’s fourth TD pass of the game was caught by Colin Baker.

Norco scored on their opening drive and led 7-0. The Broncos came back and ran up 35 unanswered points to take a commanding 35-7 lead at the half. It didn’t get much better for the Cougars in the second half as they were outscored 21-12 and ended up being eliminated from the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.

Bronco running back Tito Feliciano led the charge on the ground as he scored two touchdowns for Vista Murrieta. On special teams, Kwesi Mashack took a kickoff 72 yards into the Cougar end zone for a touchdown and Denby also returned a punt for a 63 yards touchdown. It was Mashack’s third kickoff return for a TD this year.

Led by defense ends Curtis Bolton and Tyler Cook, the Broncos shut down the Cougar’s prolific offense Friday night. Greg Hoyd, Mashack and Denby helped slow Norco’s passing game and held Victor Viramontes to 112 yards rushing. Norco QB Cory Young ran for 107 yards and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Williams late in the fourth.

The Broncos will face the Huskies at Centennial in Corona on Friday night. The Huskies are coming off of an 86-56 scorefest against Upland. Running back Tre Watson set an area rushing record of 517 yards in the game.

This will be the fifth consecutive season that Vista Murrieta is in the Division Championship game. The Broncos and Huskies will face each other for the third consecutive year. Centennial has won two of the three games.

"Ten years ago when we started the program, we thought getting there would be an amazing feat, let alone five in a row," Candaele said. "Next one’s a big one. You’ve got to play well and win the next one for it to be the season that you want."

Game time is 7pm.
