Just a week after the Centennial Huskiesí offense put up a record 86 points and 946 yards in a CIF Semifinals game, their defense starred in the Inland Division 2013 CIF Southern Section-Ford Football Championship, presented by Farmers. The Huskies defeated #1-seed Vista Murrieta for the third time in four consecutive title match-ups. In what was expected to be an offensive scorefest, the defenses made the difference.

It was mid-thirties on the field and the Huskiesí defense put the freeze on the powerful Vista Murrieta Bronco offense, limiting them to only twelve points and under 250 yards. The Broncos averaged 50.6 points and over 400 yards per game throughout the season.

In the first half, the Huskies brought the heat and sacked Broncosí QB Coltin Gerhart four times, held him to twenty yards rushing, intercepted one of his eight passes, denied all six third down conversion attempts, and forced two turnovers. The Broncosí only scores were on two Aaron Ruth field goals and a double pass play from Gerhart to Randy Beggs to Darrel Denby. "Defense was absolutely phenomenal!" exclaimed Huskiesí head coach Matt Logan, "Our defense held them to three points; our offense gave up nine. Defense wins championships!"

The Broncosí offense relied heavily throughout the season on Gerhart, who averaged 128 yards passing and 108 yards rushing throughout the season. He was held to 79 yards passing on 10-of-19 attempts and 28 yards rushing on fifteen carries. Gerhart transferred to Vista Murrieta this summer from Norco, one of Centennialís Big VIII League rivals. "We knew we had to limit his running and ability to sustain drives," said Logan. The Huskies' defense kept him under constant pressure to shut him down.

The Broncosí defense also starred, holding Centennial to less than half its average (55.8 points per game), forcing four first half turnovers, three turnovers-on-downs, and limiting the Huskies to one second half score. Defensive back Kwesi Mashack had two interceptions, Jalen Russell had one. Like many other teams, however, they were unable to stop running back Tre Watson who rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. In last yearís win, Watson rushed fifteen times for 105 yards and one score.

Watson ended the night with 302 yards on 48 carries, his sixth 300-yd rushing game of the year and his twelfth game with at least two touchdowns. "He showed up big time," said Logan, "a phenomenal effort by him."

Centennial started with the ball at the 48 and scored two minutes later on a five-yard run by Watson. Mashack intercepted a Robert Webber (13-of-23, 207 yards) pass to set up Ruthís 30-yd field goal and put the Broncos on the scoreboard 7-3.

Centennial drove eighty yards in eleven plays; Watson scored from eight yards out, 14-3 at the end of the first.

Mashack thrilled the crowd with an 86-yard kick-off return that was called back for a questionable block in the back penalty. The Broncos were hampered by seven penalties in the first half. The Broncos were forced to punt.

The Huskies drove 98 yards in eight plays. Webber hit Eric Locklin on a 21-yard post pass for a 20-3 lead. The Broncosí Jason Williams came up with the football on a muffed punt to give the Broncos an extra possession. Ruth made a 45-yd field goal, 20-6.

Just before the end of the half, Gerhart passed back to the left to Beggs (a back-up quarterback) who lofted a ball into the end zone; Denby got under a defender to come back and make a scoop catch for the score, 20-12.

Temecula native, Greyson Bankhead, who plays for Centennial, scored the only second-half touchdown. His outside-inside move fooled safety Beggs and Webber hit Bankhead for an 86-yard touchdown down the middle of the field to seal the Centennial victory, 26-12.

Broncosí running back Tito Feliciano added 147 yards on the ground.

"The game came down to their front seven versus our front and they won the battle," said Vista Murrieta coach Coley Candaele, "They did a great job."

This is Centennialís eighth CIF Section title since 2000. They have been to four state title games, winning once. They find out Sunday whether they play in the State Bowl Championship.
