The Big matchup in the Pac-5 Championship ended Saturday night with a 34-7 victory for the St. John Bosco Braves over rival Mater Dei Monarchs. The Pac-5 Champs advance to play the Huskies from Centennial High school in Corona in a Southern California Regional bowl game. The winner will advance to play a northern Califonia Champion for the State Championship.

Centennial won the CIF SS Inland Division title last Friday against Vista Murrieta. The Braves are ranked fifth in the Nation by USA Today.

The game started with both teams feeling each other out in the pressure-packed first quarter. Mater Dei was the first to score and led 7-0 in the second quarter on a blocked punt. That would be the last time they would lead in the game. The Braves quickly put ten points on the board with a 33-yard Reid Budrovich field goal and a Josh Rosen eleven-yard TD pass to Jaleel Wadood. St. John Bosco led 10-7 at the half.

The Braves scored again in the third quarter on Reid Budrovich’s second field goal, a 30-yarder. Manasseh Anesi made the score 20-7 as he capped a Brave drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown.

St, John Bosco dominated on defense, allowing only seven points on a blocked punt that was returned five yards for their only TD of the game. Mater Dei managed to gain just 217 yards of total offense. Linebackers Chandler Leniu, Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and Malik Dorton shut down the Mater Dei attack.

The Braves scored twice in the final quarter on Sean McGrew’s twelve-yard rushing TD and quarterback Josh Rosen’s six-yard TD pass to Jaleel Wadood. Rosen ended the game completing eight of his 12 passes for 95 yards. He also gained 113 yards on the ground. Sean McGrew led the Braves with 117 yards rushing.

The Braves next opponent is the explosive Centennial team from Corona. The Huskies are coming off a very impressive win over the Broncos from Vista Murrieta 26-12.
