Murrieta Councilman Kelly Bennett was set to lead the council as mayor for 2014, but in an unexpected change, Councilman Alan Long has been appointed instead.

The motion was made by Councilman Randon Lane at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Bennett had been appointed to be mayor due to a mayoral rotation policy.

Lane said although Bennett has done a wonderful job as councilwoman, the rotation policy was unfair in this case.

He said Long would not have had the chance to Advertisement

serve as mayor before his first four-year term as a council member ends in December 2014, and then he would have to be reelected.

As long as there is a majority vote the council has the legal ability to waive the rotation to appoint Long as mayor, according to City Attorney Leslie Devaney.

In her second term, which will end in December 2014, Bennett has already served as mayor.

The motion passed with a 3-2 vote, with Bennett and Gibbs voting no.

Harry Ramos will serve as pro tem.
