CORONA - Authorities confirmed today that a 91-year-old Orange County man seriously hurt when a tour bus overturned on Interstate 15 in Corona died from his injuries.

Khang Tieu of Midway was among nearly two-dozen passengers injured when a Sina International bus crashed into a center divider and flipped onto its side Thursday as the driver lost control while traveling on rain-slicked roads.

The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. on northbound I-15, just south of Old Temescal Road, shortly after a thunderstorm moved through the area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Tieu was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at about 10 p.m., according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office.

Twenty-two other passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, CHP Officer Travis Monks said.

35-year-old Jian Fei Duan, walked away with minor injuries and declined treatment, Monks said.

Monks said Duan was approaching Ontario Avenue at 65 mph and "was unable to maintain control of the bus on the wet roadway."

"The bus traveled off the roadway, into the center median area," the officer said. "The bus struck the center median guardrail and overturned onto its side, coming to rest blocking the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes."

The northbound side of the freeway was partially shut down while emergency crews set up a triage area and placed crash victims in ambulances.

The freeway was fully reopened at 8:15 p.m.

The bus has been moved to a secure location for a complete inspection to determine if a mechanical failure may have contributed to the crash, Monks said.
