A headstall donated by Temeculaís Dale Chavez sold for $420 at the Dec. 14, 2013 auction which was part of the Cowboy Reunion during National Finals Rodeo Week.

The headstall was purchased by Stan and Pat Harter, who live in Gilbert, Arizona. Stan Harter was the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Associationís 1966 Calf Roping champion and roped in professional rodeo for approximately 20 years including qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo in Calf Roping from 1971 to 1973.

The Harters plan to give the headstall to their 13-year-old grandson, Cody Harter, a junior rodeo champion who lives in the Amarillo suburb of Bushland.

"Itís a beautiful headstall," Stan Harter said.

A headstall is the part of a bridle or halter which fits around a horseís head to control a horse being ridden.

"Itís a very nice headstall," said auctioneer Jess Franks.

While Franks was conducting the auction, the headstall was being displayed by Dorise Watson of Midland, Texas, who is the widow of 1940s and 1950s bull rider Bud Watson.

Cowboy Reunion took place Dec. 12-14, 2013 at the Orleans Hotel. The reunion involves conversations and also includes silent auction and live auction sessions. The headstall sold at

the live auction. The auctions, drawings, and registration fees raise money for the Justin

Cowboy Crisis Fund, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the Rodeo Historical Society.

"Itís all worthwhile," Stan Harter said. "Itís for a worthy cause."

Stan Harter is not related to Bradley Harter, who competed in Saddle Bronc Riding at the 2013 National Finals Rodeo and in seven previous NFR competitions, although the two have known each other since first meeting at a college rodeo in which Bradley Harter was competing.

In addition to donating a headstall for the auction, Dale Chavez Company had a booth at the Dec. 5-14, 2013 Cowboy Christmas Gift Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"Heís given us one every year," Cowboy Reunion organizer Liz Kesler said of Chavez. "Heís one of our most consistent donors."
