GOHS Wins Five Counties Water Polo Championship


Lady Wolfpack Defeats Wildcats 13-9

The Great Oak Girls Varsity Water Polo team (10-2) won the Five Counties Tournament Championship with a 13-9 win over Redlands East Valley (REV). REV is the #5-ranked team in CIF-SS Division V and the four-time Citrus Belt League Champion.

Great Oak demonstrated great ball movement and started out early with a 5-1 lead; they led 8-6 going into the final quarter. The Wolfpack scored on its first three possessions (and the first four goals of the period) to put the game out of reach and come home with the title win.

Angela Rice led the Wolfpack with her season-high four goals and Jill Wulf had three. Maddie Wieseler led REV with five goals. Great Oak goalkeeper Sydney Lawyer had eight saves in the win.

Great Oak reached the finals of the 24-team three-day tournament with wins over Cathedral City (19-8), Temecula Valley (21-8), Temescal Canyon (21-9) and St Lucy’s (19-14).

Abby Buxbaum had 22 goals, 19 assists and nine steals in the five games. Raegan Castillo also had 22 goals. Tara Prentice contributed 14 goals, 19 assists and 23 steals. Rice scored nine of her season’s thirteen goals in this tournament; Wolf had 13 goals and nine assists. Goalkeepers Lawyer and Kelly Rowen recorded 37 saves and 12 saves, respectively.

The Lady Wolfpack had previously won the Redlands Winter Classic in December with wins over Xavier Prep, Beaumont, Chaparral. They defeated Arlington 11-2 for the tournament championship.

Prentice, a sophomore, leads the team with 48 goals, 46 assists and 50 steals; junior teammate Castillo has 46 goals and 23 assists on the season. Lawyer, a junior, has 80 saves on the season.

Great Oak opens league play at local powerhouse Murrieta Valley, the #2-ranked team in Division 2 on January 16 and hosts Vista Murrieta on January 23rd.
