Great Oak (12-1) came into Murrieta Valley and sent a very loud and clear message to all of their rivals in the Southwestern League Tuesday night. The Wolfpack is talented and ready for league play. Great Oak is good enough to be in the hunt to dethrone defending league champion Vista Murrieta this season.

Murrieta Valley, the defending CIF SS 2A champions assumed it would be business as usual as they battled Great Oak to a 14-11 deficit in the first period. The Wolfpack then proceeded to shut down the Murrieta Valley offense and put on a scoring exhibition for the rest of the evening. Great Oak held Murrieta Valley to just 3 points in the second period while scoring 19 to take a 35-14 lead at the half.

The Nighthawks never recovered. The Wolfpack’s hustling, physical squad outscored Murrieta Valley 18-7 in the third period and 16-5 in the final frame to silence the home team crowd and win the game convincingly 67-26.

Murrieta Valley’s Ariana Hernandez was named Player of the game by Nighthawk Coach Scott Richards. "Ariana Hernandez led the team by consistently handling the ball against tough pressure and had a ‘never say die’ attitude throughout the game which demonstrated her heart and character," said Richards. "She had 2 great blocks, 3 assists, a steal, a couple points and a couple of tough defensive rebounds. Way to show a lot of heart."

The Wolfpack will face Vista Murrieta at home tonight. The Broncos demolished Temecula Valley 67-26 in their league opener. These may be the two best teams in the Southwestern League.

The game is at 5:15pm. The Vista-Great Oak Boys Basketball game follows immediately at 7pm.

Murrieta Valley will be at Murrieta Mesa to play the 10-7 Rams. Murrieta Mesa is also 0-1 in league and lost to Chaparral 57-30 in the opener.
